Vac Lapper

Does anyone have a lapper sail plan and dimensions for the Vac?

I have a 100% jib, but not a lapper. I haven't tried it yet but others have been made to the same size. This is one I designed and Paul made for me. He stated that he made others to the same size, but who to I don't know.

This is the third one I have made, The sail I trimmed down a bit from number two. I still don't have it right yet, but I will buy a bigger tarp next year. The problem is getting the foot of the sail to fill the gap. I believe I need to condence the hard ware to a smaller package. I would like to gain a foot lower. I feel this will improve the sail.

Try stretching two lines from the mast head to the bow sprit then back to where you want the clew of your lapper and the other line from the mast head to the clew of the imaginary lapper. Then measure the lines and lay them out on a tarp, and see what you get.

If you plan to use the lapper from the same stay as your stock jib, just lay your stock jib down on a tarp and dream on :wink: You just need to increase the length of the foot following the same angle.

OK, I guess I've got a problem with my boat terminology and I really don't know what a lapper is then. I thought it is a large jib which overlaps the mast like a genoa or maybe a bit smaller... which is what I want to build....

Florin, You are right. A lapper overlaps the mast a bit. A 100% er fills all the area from the jib stay to just forward of the mast. I think my 100%er has about 13 sq ft more then the standard jib.

Yeah, I think I wanna make one of those.... I think 100%er should be large enough to start with, and also should give us more speed. What size jib sheets do you guys use?

Here are the measurements of the 100% jib I designed for my Vac.

Luff: 17' 6"

Leach 13' 9"

Foot 10' even

At a point up the luff toward the head 6'3", a line drawn there 90 degrees from this point should connect to the clew. This is called the miterline and should be 7'10.5"

Now keep in mind that I have not used mine as yet, so it is not proven. You could compare this with the standard Vac. jib and then you will know if it will work for you. By the way, knowing the miter line lenght and the point on the luff where it starts, you don't have to know the foot and leach lenght. You do have to know the luff lenght.

Thanks Arnie, I will compare the measurements with the one I have, plus check to see if it fits on my rig. My mast sits at least 1-2' taller than what the plans call for. This would maybe allow for more sqft of headsail hehehe. I also find the foot of the sail to be cut at too high of an angle compared to the deckline. I don't really think that's necessary because I really don't have anything that tall to clear on deck up there. Maybe I'll cut mine at an angle lower to the deck and see what hapens.
