(I also plan to pry as much knowledge from him as possible, hee hee :twisted: ) Truely though, this will allow me to get a up close and personel look at a "completed" Weekender, something that up till now I have not been able to do. Craig Posted June 9, 2004 Posted June 9, 2004 Jake now that you have opened the ballast trump I will give you the benefit of my vast knowledge of sailing a Vac with lead in the forepeak. Ray and I corresponded as you know while we were adding the lead to our craft. I chose lead plate in the forepeak around the mast as opposed to Ray's external bulbs. I was too lazy to redesign my keel box on the trailer and the 4' of difference in lever arm just doesn't matter on a boat this size. As I have posted before the boat handles much better in terms of course keeping ability as the lead keeps the nose down. The pounding is gone and the 10 hp motor and my fat a__ are now in much better trim. I frankly find no downside to the addition. Trailering and speed do not seem to be effected in anyway. However, if some of the folks are really trying to load or unload the boat with the stern 18" out of the water; as some of the photos show, then they will have troubles. Otherwise I recommend the addition. I have somewhere around 280lb in the Saralee I think; however, I find she needs just a bit more weight a little further aft. Let's see if I can come up with that number for you using complicated engineering analysis terms. The poly styrene lined cooler with 5lb of ice weights about 8.5 lb. The ham sandwich and fruit contribute maybe 2 lb to the total. A 12 pack of Bud Lite is 144 oz, and with water at ............... Kept her pointed slightly off teh wind nearly all afternoon. Anything more, well it was more comfortable (for me) this way. We made great headway on one run, the only wind that was fairly constant. Winds were up and down, just get set with one and then a big just would come through. More later...... Quote
capt jake Posted June 11, 2004 Author Posted June 11, 2004 Pretty good description of what happened. With the reefs in, the outhaull is snug by default. When the wind came up; I felt more 'inclined' to pinch to windward, as going the other way might have proved ....less than desireable, shall we say! Couldn't launch at Boston Harbor and make the island, darn! Tide was out to far and the is a very shallow ramp when the tide is out. Sooo back to Swantown marina again!. Lot sf peaple there to watch and have fun.. Sailed with a larger vessel nearby today, probably 28-32 feet. They had a reefed main and a full jib. They were ballasted and keeled. They were heeling pretty good all day. One time I saw them nearly go over (they were pinching to the wind as well), they pinched tighter and let teh main loose to avoid capsize. This give you any better idea af the conditions??? BTW, the furling jib work AWESOME!!!! Never tried it to reef, but I am quite sure it would not work. Remember, this is on a flexible SS 1/8" 7/19 line. Unlike Barry's proposed reefing/furling set-up. Quote
