Inboard propulsion??

I was cruising down by the marina today when I spotted a Wekender in the outboard shop. Being the curious soul that I am I had to stop and check it out.

It was an older boat, with moderate of rot around the cabin and the forward hatch. The hull seemed really sound. In the lazarette they had installed a motor well!! In which was a small outboard motor. The motor protruded through the hull and a short section of the aft keel was removed to allow room for the prop. A small hoop ran from the keel ander the prop and back to the transom (protection for the prop and also served as the lower mount for the rudder gudgeon).

Another modification was a tiller with a barn door style rudder simular to most cat boats.

The motor stayed in the water while under sail and was mounted in a fixed position.

Pretty interesting to say the least. I wish I had brought my camera with me. I may head downtown again later this week, I will take the camera then.

Hope you're able to take a photograph or two. Several have talked about such a well, and Chris Gerkin, I believe, is in the early stages of incorporating a well in his design.

You still have to deal with the issue of drag. In the light air that you went out in on your first two sails, the motor in the water would have seriously affected your ability to be sailing when the others were sitting and watching you go by. 8)

I'd be interested in knowing how they keep water out of the lazarette.

Looking at the patch and protruding sealant a leak may have been a problem at one time. I would like to know just how much drag was present.

Not that I want to mess with my keel. I like backing in European style to shore. Heck I use the rudder for a step up into the boat. Now that's a strong rudder, or the reason I'm repairing the dang thing now :oops:

Seriously you did good, nice to see one with a little age. And good eye for picking her out from amongst the other boats.

Maybe you could fob a card off on the boat shop guy to pass on to the owner to make a post on messing about. Curiosity that's the lab tech in me. :wink:

The motor actually set in a well, sealed all around. This took up a fair amount of the lazareete.

I didn't see any evidence of leaks in the set up.

I am not seeing this, though I think you may be refering to the little stand-off support coming fore of the prop to the aft end of the motor? this looked liike it acted as a prop guard as well as the lower mount for the pintle (or gudgeon?) for the rudder.

I will be down that direction today and will see if it is still there.

Well, it is gone now. The only thing I could learn is that they removed teh outbard and installed an outboard bracket. The boat shop told me that the owner is going to fill in the well and leave the motor on the bracket.
