adla Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 I spent the afternoon doing prep work on the "hard to access area" in the front...I had glassed the joints and epoxied the sides so they were hit with the sander and then primed with a primer made especially for glassy/glossy surfaces ~ I had never used the stuff before but I'm a mad woman adventurer....and it applied real nice. It was oil based and "stunk" It wasn't necessary because I hit the area quick with a sander but...i'm a bit eccentric. I then buzzed across the stringers on the open side with the orbital sander for good measure and had to use a belt sander on the cabin bulkhead because it stuck out when I ran the straight edge across it (about 1/4 inch). Long itchy story short...the other side is on, the front is primed (except the new panel) and all the joints are glassed (my own madness)..... Barry, I was looking at a source online for the kevlar cloth...price isn't an issue really since I like to spend money (ima girl) I will have to look at my internet explorer history to see where I have been...ROCKS are a real issue for both the lakes that are close to me. Lake Mead is a result of the damning of the colorado river and pretty treacherous...and Walker Lake (near my 2nd home) is a rock heaven...I mean there was a sale on rocks and walker lake cleaned uP! It is the rockiest lake I have ever seen and I love it! The store in Henderson carries not a lot of anything...no floatation no good cloth....but they have a sale on top siders (shoes) and the West System epoxy is only 45 bucks a gallon and 19 doLlars for the slow hardner. On a more serious note...I am not interested in a cloth that is hard to "wet out" for the hull....I can see doing the chine and keel in kevlar if it is a bit touchy to work with but frankly I'd rather get a good finish with a nice cloth and then sand and fill to an absolute minimum. I am already using a high build/high strength woven fabric for the transom joint (my own issue) and may do the same on the chine rather than tape...I tend to be a bit whimsy...I don't think much of filler/bondo/bondoglass...for anything other than cosmetic touches so, there that is... Chris Gerkin Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Your work looks great. I went with kevlar tape on the keel and chines and it was not difficult. I have found a good finish is in the hull prep. Lots of filling with epoxy/filler. High build primer and several coats, all sanded, of a good paint. I also used an HVLP. Keep up the good work. Quote
