You have been a good source of inspiration to many. I don't know how many hits you get or if you can tell how varied they are, but you have some great photos and good information on your site along with some great drawings. I love the narrative on your sailing adventures, in particular the trip North for the Great Gaff Race. My seats are based upon what you did so that I can get a cooler built into the base of one and have top access to the other spaces. Tool tray over the foot well on on side and shallow storage for extra fittings, etc. on the other side over the other foot well. When people don't understand encapsulation or stitch and glue, I send them to your site because the progress photos are very complete. Capt. Jake, Must be cold up there for you to consider building a model. Figured you would be hard at work finishing up that workshop. I seriously considered bringing one over here with me, but was politely informed that there would be too much eye strain for me to do that and if I needed something to do, she would find plenty to keep me busy. :roll: Ahhhh, off to fit some more coconuts. er, ah find some more coconuts. Thanks all, for the kind commentary. I don't intend to take the site down. It's been a lot of work to put up and to keep up. Originally, it was my intent to help others with pictures, but that was back when construction pictures were hard to find. I use to get periodic emails from people who were finding my site useful. Now there are lots of great pictures available and I seldom get comments anymore. But perhaps, I'm getting emails now that I can't find due to all the SPAM. :x Nowadays I keep the site up for my own enjoyment and if others want to see what I'm up to they are welcome to join me. Bill, you should have an email with all the attached files. I'm glad to see all those pictures of the great models. I think they are a great way to learn about boats and they look so good. :salute: Quote

I'll be going by the store a few times in the upcoming days/week, let me know if I can help you out in any way with questions or if you need me to actually look at anything...they have one or two on display (along with all the others).... I'd like to build some sort of glass case display stands, down the road.. maybe we, or someone, can come up with some specs on a genaric plan we could all use for these models... I got a lot of crap from my better half for doing so.. I might paint my weekender model depending on how it looks... I want to build the friendship, and just leave it all bright... I sent my sails of to be sewn, I tried but had pretty bad luck. I have a sister in law how has a surger and about 20 other sewing type amchines. I hope to have them back in a week or so. I have most of the running rigging in place, but can't snug it up until I get the sials on her. I am nearly done! After putting it off for almost three years! All wood and NO plastic. Heck the blocks even work as blocks! (less the sheaves). Carvel planked under with a cold molded veneer of walnut on that. The carvel is all nailed with little teeny nails! No wonder my eyes are going! Quote

Speaking of finishes. My partner was out wandering around yesterday and came upon a small shed with a number of wooden racks under it. There were a couple young girls and a little boy very busy doing something with coconuts and she was sure that they were drying them for the coconut meat. They were, but they saved the shells and dried, sanded and polished them and finished them to make coconut tops for sale in the hula shops. So they are making her a custom set. :shock: 8) Quote
Bill Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 I did sew my own sails. I'd tried to cheat the first few times, used glue and iron on tapes etc...but, none of it looked quite right! I can sew with a machine, well...it's what "I" call sewing anyway..having lived the self-surviving bachelor life for many many years and being an independent type, I taught myself enough to make repairs and patch up most small stuff. I had an old machine here that wasn't working, so I managed to find a guy locally that fixes all sorts of old machines, and decided to do the sails correctly. He fixed up the machine for a few bucks and I proceeded to run a few test trys for a night or two. Once I'd gained enough of my old skills back I sewed them up..Didn't come out too bad..I'm satisfied! All my rigging does work, just like the real thing. Having it work comes in handy. Over the years due to moister and humidity etc. rigging will sometimes sag or get a little "funky"..all I need to do is tighten her up a bit and she's as good as new. I have an old 3 Mast ship I built from scratch years ago, from all sorts of "junk" I had sitting in drawers. Elmers glue, cardboard, wood scraps, shoe polish, matchsticks..you name it! The rigging on it is a real joke..I new nothing of real rigging, had no plans, and just "winged" it...glued the crap out of everything...all sagging now and looks like poop...but all in all it was fun, and gave me something to do at the time..I'll see if I can post a photo of it... cheers, Bill Quote

When it came to the hem, and trying to make it look right from both sides, that is when i thought a surger would be in order! I spent some time on their site and couldn't find a place to get a catalog. If they charge for it, I will pay them what they need to send it out. I can e-mail my address to you. Been looking at several of their kits for a long time. The one you built is a real beauty. The New England Lobster Smack is large enough for RC and would be a nice step to the Friendship. I mentioned a 1/4 scale Friendship that I've been thinking of building. It would be right off the plans that we are thinking about building full scale with another couple. Figured we could plan a lot of what we may do by building a large enough model that we can play with the interior layout and plan our deck layout. Of course it would be RC and nearly 9 ft long. That is one reason I've been looking for a new shop to work in. Got to be big enough to house the toys while we build them. Quote

My wife bought me a stripper canoe model for Christmas. I had it completed in 4 days. I then found a site that featured a stripper kayak (as I was researching 'building' for a class I was teaching), and was captivated by it.!!! I researched for a long time and bought some plans and built the strip kayak that many of you are familiar with. After completion, I felt compeled to build a sailboat. Thus My wife bought me this awesome model. I worked on it for about 8 months and finally gave it a break. In hte meanwhile I was reasearching for the real thing! I bought many plans, but decided upon a prtially completed Weekender to satisfy my urge! I completed the Weekender last spring (I know!!) but have yet to launch. Anyway, after we recently moved I decided to start doing some clearing out. I stumbled upon the boat model that I posted pictures of and decided it was time to complete thjis buggar and put it on display. It really hasn't taken much time to get it nearly done. Far less than the original construciton time of the hull and planking. Anyway, it all started with a view of a boat on a website, to a model to the real thing. Now I am hooked!!!!! :) :) And lovin' it!!! Quote

I could ask about "just buying the plans" if you don't want the whole kit. That way you could scale it up the way you want. I know that on the herreschoff, the laser cut parts had layout sheets to size and you could have easily scaled that one the way you wanted. I can check and see if, it's the same with the Friendship for you... I was in the store yesterday..digging in the odds-n-ends baskets..I picked up the WOODEN BOAT calender (2003) for 50 cents. I like Benjamin Mendlowitz's photographs and will probably frame a few up, for my shop walls... Bill Quote

I didn't have any real model materials, I think I sanded down some pencils for the Masts and spars..I used carpet thread and glue to make rat lines, them "painted" them with some left over liquid shoe polish.... I have a set of plans on order for the full scale 38' Friendship. We are going to send it out for bid to a couple places up here to have the hull/deck/cabin built and a diesel engine installed. The plan (so far at least in the talking stages) is to then bring it to a shop where I can get a couple interior finish people I know to come give me a hand fitting the interior into it. Get the hull and exterior finished. Then get the spars ready along with the rigging and once that is finished. Haul it off to launch. We figure it will take us a year to do the entire job. But only if we decide it is something that still is digging at us after getting the bids and estimates to finish it. Hence the quarter scale model. It will come off the plans so we understand the entire process from keel to top of the mast. My partner is hooked on Friendships. She has made offers on several but not been accepted. All of them needed extensive work to get them the way she would want them. I'm kinda hooked on the idea of one. We have a couple that is moving to Port Townsend to retire and they have been remodeling an old Victorian home there over the last 3 years. They are hooked just as bad as she is and would like to partner on it. So....who knows? I think I will be just as happy and maybe more so with just the Weekender and maybe a Vacationeer for our use here in the Puget Sound area. But she thinks we should head on up to Alaska on cruises with it. She's gone on two sailing cruises up into the Queen Charlottes with me in the past and loves it. So if she has the bug and can afford it, maybe! Quote
