  1. no the first part of the video is pretty slow - not too much happening. I have put all the clips in pretty much in chronological order - I think there was not much wind near the start of that trip, also when away for a week I guess I am more likely to go out in stronger winds near the end of the week than near the start. One thing that I have noticed is that when I get back from the holiday and look at the footage there is always much more low wind footage than high wind - I think this is a reflection that once the wind picks up it is much more difficult to steer, hold the mainsheet and take video in the right direction. I don't think I have ever goot footage when things are getting really windy. note that this is now on youtube with a different second audio track. (I have edited the first message in this thread and I see that the forum has automatically recognised a youtube url and treated appropriatly - very nice! )
  2. I have managed to put the various clips together to make a video, I attempted to load it to youtube, but sadly youtube has stripped the video of its audio track (for justified copyright reasons) - so I will have to make some modifications to it before it will be availible there with a soundtrack. in the meantime it can be downloaded from my server, though be warned this is not a small file, it is just over 50MB.. http://www.waynemunro.com/misc/marahau_07-09.wmv the movie runs for just under 10 minutes and contains the better footage from the sailing holidays that I have been on with Buck from 2007, 1008, 2009 in Marahau. I'll add a note when I get the youtube fixed up, but that will probably be a couple of days. I have managed to get this onto youtube now, with modification:
  3. Hi Fintan, as unlikely as it would seem - he is a distant relation, I think we worked out he was my grandfathers cousin.
  4. Hi Perttu, surprised anyone remembers the old video - it is still around, here are the links: 3-min version: http://www.waynemunro.com/misc/2006_marahau_3min_medium.wmv 18-min version: http://www.waynemunro.com/misc/2006_marahau_18min_med.wmv I am going to try and get that new video done, just did one for work last night, so now I am in the mood... though really should do the one for my wedding which was a couple of years ago.. maybe I'll consider the sailing one practice for the wedding video. 5. In January this year I had the good fortune to spend a week in Marahau (South Island, New Zealand) with Buck and our weekenders. I took a fair amount of video and picutes (which I have not got around to processing into a usable form yet), and my favourite picture is shown below (hopefully). The beach at Marahau drys out each low tide to about 15o yards out, so our boats sit on the dry for a few hours each side of low tide. On this evening a goodly sized storm came in and buck had unfortunatly moored his boat in just a bit close to where the transition to steep beach happened, as a consequence it was getting a bit of a beating. This image was taken just before Buck swam to move it further out (he is a brave man).
  6. Alas, I was the fool that split his mast trying to add a spreader - though it was due to the stupid way that I implemented it, rather than any particular problem with the spreader concept. here is the thread talking about the failure: http://www.messing-about.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2066 I still have the spreaders on the boat, though modified to do more reasonable force transferal - and they have been solid as a rock since then - and zero interference of the gaff jaws with the shrouds. To modify I added a steel band just below the spreader (after glueing the mast back together) and a steel band around the top, which the top bolt goes through. I then added turnbuckles from the outside of the spreader to the top steel band so that the turning moment from the shroud forces is significantly reduced. I don't think I have a picture of the final setup, but it is still going strong and has been out in some fairly strong winds.
  7. Hey Frank, looks quite nice. I work for a company which does site search, so I understand how difficult this sort of thing can be to do right. The results appear to be relevant, which is good.. were I to put on my critical hat I guess I could note a few things that strike me about it. - the categories selection box seems to be a bit of a waste of time for this site, which is not a reflection of the search, but that the niche of this site is already so focussed that just about every result will be in one category (if they are categorized at all). I assume this is a reflection of this being just a site restrict on a much wider search. - the google ads seem well placed, they are not too invasive - I hope you are getting a cut ? - I changed the 'In:' setting to 'my threads' and it then required login to boardtracker - I wasn't too sure what was happening there, I guess I was being a bit optimistic and was hoping that it would somehow have been passed by messing-about id and would be able to restrict the result set to the threads that I have contributed too. - it is nice that it lists the number of views and replies in each entry - may be interesting to be able to order by that ? though I guess you should get that effect a little with the relevancy as a thread with many entries should have more matches to the search word (assuming it comes up periodically) Sorry if I sound like I am being picky - you did ask It does seem better than the old one though - thanks. 8. I have used a bit of free software called 'gpstrackmaker' which was pretty handy for this stuff - would get the data from the gps, and then had a button which automagically opened google earth and loaded a kml file that it wrote all as one smooth operation.
  9. I'll drop him a line too - the more the merrier And you are right buck, things are pretty quiet in winter - weekender has not shifted for some time.
  10. following the demise of my normal car on my recent trip I purchased a 1992 2.0 litre automatic 4wd Subaru legacy - I used it to get the weekender out of the water and to tow it home which was a 5-6 hour trip with a few reasonable hills - it did it without any trouble - I could tell it was not as powerful as my old car (1999 2.4 litre mitsubishi magna) but it performed fine.
  11. the short video was the 'barenaked ladies' a canadian group, the longer version had three tracks by 'the flying pickets' and english group and a couple of other tracks that I can't remember off the top of my head.
  12. Hey Capt Jake, I had not noticed your earlier post with your video, just went back and had a look, very nice... waves look big in the video, I bet they seemed huge in real life would you like to host your wmv files off my server, I can figure out a way for you to transfer them there if you like. I have been using windows movie maker to make my video, I am actually quite impressed with it, though it will only save .wmv files which I found a bit annoying, not because they are large (as they are nicely compressed), but because they are in a propietary format. let me know if you would like a place to shove your videos.
  13. ahh, yes we did have great weather when we were there Fintan, though they do have some of the best weather in the country there, these videos are spread over 4 days of the 7 we were there, I think. There was something wrong with the upload, I have just repaired it , so the last few minutes should be avaliable now.
  14. ha ha, I remember when I wanted to get mine onto the trailer, got about 7 other guys round to help lift, and then some smart arse suggested that we just line the dolly that it was on up to the end of the trailer and wind it on with the winch... worked a treat, could have done it alone
  15. hmm.. something may be a little wrong with this file, I just played it and the end seems to be missing - I'll check it this evening.
