Thought you guys might like a couple of pictures, they always seem to be appreciated around here. I have just been painting the inside and top of the weekender.. feel like I am getting close to the end now...

I am about to put a line in the sand of 4 weeks away for launching... I estimate that will give me enough time to get most stuff done. I might be missing some of the frills (such as grab rails and a main hatch cover).. but I am sure they are non-essential

Looks great! I really like the way the crushed walnut shells look on the deck. For people looking for them, you can sometimes find them at a local gunsmith or sandblasting shop (they use them as an abrasive for cleaning things they don't want to scratch up too much, like guns, brass objects, etc.)

I can also get it very cheaply here, if I buy 500#. I've been thinking of setting up a "crushed walnut shell store" and selling it! 8)

I was skeptical about the walnut shells, I almost just went and got some sand.. but remembered that I have textured with sand before and ended up with skinned knees (got sand which was too sharp), so I thought I should at least investigate the Stevenson approved option. Not only was I surprised to find them (they use them for bird litter), but was quite impressed with how they feel and look. very happy with the look on the deck.

the bag I boought cost me NZ$16, which is about US$9 or something, and was more than enough for the job, got about 1/3 left in the bag, though most of the rest has ended up in the vacuum cleaner. So not a particularly major cost.

I really like the way they work ... if you hit them just briefly with a vibrating type of sander and 100 grit sandpaper, it knocks the tips off the shells and you get a "Kool Deck" type of finish ("Kool Deck" is a type of deck finish around swimming pools here in the states). Works very nicely.

And its cheap here too. In bulk its something like .50 a pound, and I used about 7 pounds on Aslan. I paid about $2 a pound in the 10 pound quantity I was using.

thanks for the offer on the love birds Barry... but sadly I will decline Perhaps what I need to find is another boat to build which has about 1/3 of the deck are of the weekender.. just to use up the last of these walnuts. Maybe a skipjack !

If you get some walnut shells, we'll buy some from you. I'd like to re-do the non-skid on the bottom of the Phaedra. Plus it's good to have around.

waynemunro, The boat is looking beautiful. Looks like you are at the point where you really begin to see the fruit of all your labor. What did you use for paint?

the pictures make it look a bit better than it actually is in person, there are a number of small imperfections in the paint job. However I am very happy with it.. and tend to give it a look over for a few minutes before going to work

the paint is just standard white gloss enamel house paint. I have sprayed it on as my brush skills are not all that good.

Wayne, thanks for posting the pictures. I'm always so inspired to see how other folks projests are coming along. Makes me want to get busy and get my boat to that point. There seems to be no probles getting crushed walnut shells here in Podunk. There are lots of gun shops around here that sell it. Good luck on your launch date and keep us posted with more pictures. Wayne is being typically modest, this boat is finished to a high professional standard without being overdone. I looked at it a few weeks ago when passing through Christchurch and its beautifully robust and well constructed. It might not be overfinished, but NZ conditions are not mild and all boats have to take the rough with the smooth. Often its getting home that counts and faith in one's boat so rewarding. Wayne and i have had some great discussions on Weekender boatbuilding , but having seen his boat I'm redoing a few bits of mine again along his lines.

Wayne I got given a belt sander for Fathers day! Here goes!

planning my launch date for labour weekend if you are keen on attending, probably the sat. Not too sure where yet, perhaps lake hood, though worried that there may be too many power boaties there, maybe lake clearwater, as i think it is sail only... other possibilities are Purau or brooklands... maybe even ellesmere I guess.
