As far as I can tell the first stage will be the most expensive and least rewarding. For around $350 I get just a keel However, steps 2 and 3 will be rewarding and considerably cheaper. Going 3d in steps (not finished yet) 4 and 5 should be much cheaper than the previous steps, and even more rewarding. After this costs should drop until I get to fiberglassing and finishing, where they will jump up again which will be ok because I'll be half way at that point. Anyone else build like this? I'll be building outside so this also minimizes the amount of wood I'll have to keep dry (excluding the boat itself). Suggestions are welcomed of course... I'm all ears. Tom Stock Quote

Andrew Posted September 10, 2003 Posted September 10, 2003 Tom That's pretty much how I'm building....I just don't have the cash 'up front' I'm now up to saving for the 1/4" for the sides and am getting more and more frustrated that I haven't got it yet while the boat has started to look like a boat. My dog doesn't mind too much, he's taken to sleeoping 'in' the boat while the sides are missing :shock: The kids think it's pretty good too - they can climb 'in' and 'rock' the boat on its dolly stand My eldest daughter told our friends the other day that 'Daddy has almost finished the boat, all he has to do is put the sides on, put the roof on and find a spot for the TV' And I thought it would be nice to get away from all the 'square screens'!! And you're paying over $5 a board foot for the 1x6. It might be worth it for the 1x6 stringer material, if you really want nice straight grain, but I think its overkill for the keel pieces. I would see if you can find a better source for the wood. The Weldwood Plastic Resin Glue is available mail order a bit cheaper, but after you factor in shipping, maybe not so much cheaper. I think my prices are for yellow pine for the keel and douglas fir for everything else. I'm going to get a new quote with *all* yellow pine except for the rubrails, rafters, etc and see what the cost is per board foot. I'm ordering my woof from "COX Lumber" here in FL. They will let me pick through the wood, and will then deliver it for free. This is a big deal since I only have a tiny 4-door sedan Quote

I was quoted $5.11 BF for yellow pine. It that way out of line? :oops: I've been having an awful with the spell checker on this forum. Couldn't get it to come up. It was my "pop-up" stopper! Quote

Lumber prices have doubled in the last month, and in some items, have tripled in some plywood and house materials. Buy as much as you can, now. Even the pressure treated wood, is scarce to unavaliable. The enviromentalists has cause the PT makers to do away with the arsenic based preservative by the end of the year. Yellow pine lumber is being bought and horded for later black market sales to the contractors, locally. OSB board has gone from 4.85 a piece in May, to $17 a baord now. It is not going be to any cheaper, the way it looks. The government bought up 600 truck loads? for Irag rebuilding. Quote

But he may have found some good sources. Also check and see if you are being priced by the board, by board feet or by the lineal foot. Makes a huge difference you know in how you figure it. The Home Depots and Lowe's price by the board primarily, the lumber yards by the board foot, and occasionally by the lineal foot on premium pieces. Quote

If so, then I way over estimated, because the prices were given to me by board ft.-tom Kind of ... square feet at 1" thick. A board foot is a board 1' x 1' x 1" thick. So a 1' x 1' x 2" thick board is really 2 board feet. The 1x12's are easy to figure ... a 10' 1 x 12 is 10 board feet. The 1 x 6 is easy also, as a 10' 1 x 6 is 5 board feet. Oyster's comment may be the reason prices have spiked. I know that Douglas Fir, which is grown in the pacific northwest, will be more pricey for you because of the freight cost. BUT, southern yellow pine is a comparable wood, and should be available cheaper than the douglas fir. The only reason the Stevenson's mention the douglas fir is that its plentiful here in the west. You can also use Poplar and some varieties of cypress, although I'm far from experienced with these woods. Maybe Charlie or Graham will chime in here as they are in your same general area (as far as wood choice goes). Quote
