I would set the cam for max of 800 in width. That will allow you to post them with a link to them and still have them large enough to view on your computer.

If the picture is just for posting, it might be easier to set the camera. But, if you plan to keep the picture for other purposes, the higher resolution is probably best. Most of the cameras now come with photo editing software that lets you resize and compress the images, so check and see if you have it already.

Computer monitors do well with photos at 75dpi and compressed from 10 - 30% in jpeg format. Most of the free programs that resize pictures will do them at 75dpi or 100, and it works fine. You wouldn't print that picture out on expensive photo paper and be happy with it, but for the Internet, its sufficient.
