Steve Tarry Posted July 30, 2003 Posted July 30, 2003 After much fussing and fuming about time to be spent on various other projects, finances, and the worthiness of any end result my meager skills will produce, I have just returned home from the lumber yard with the long material for the keel laminations and to rip into the battens. Strapping all that on top of the Subaru and hauling it back to my abode in the woods was an adventure, but we arrived intact. I got a good price too, thanks to Cap'n Jake who put me onto Puyallup's Building Material Outlet. The 1X12s are not perfect, but for $1.00 a foot, I can work around the biggest irregularities. They didn't have 1X6 at 16' for the battens, but a pair of somewhat nasty 1X4s will produce the same end result with just a bit more sawdust and some kindling for next winter left over. Anyway, looks like we're on the way to another Weekender here. Guess that visit to "Fire Escape" was all it took. Quote

Yes,it will be frustrating now and then. And you are going to want the "moaning chair". If Jake isn't thru with his, I have one you can use and pass on to the next builder. After a full year of shuffling funds to cover one disaster or another, (truck work, car work,, teeth work,,, etc.) I finally decided,,,if I don't start,,,I'll never get it built. So, last weekend I made a trip to Capitol City Lumber, here in Raleigh, NC, and purchased some Kimberly Bay Pine,(absolutely clear, absolutely flat, absolutely gorgeous stuff), hauled it to the shop,,,cleared some space and started lofting. Due to the 95 deg. temps,,,the shop booted me outta the door after getting one full keel layer cut. That was Saturday. Sunday, made a trip to the beach,(hmm,,,this is a different looking sunblock,,,((read "accelerator")) and three days of sitting in my recliner in my drawers because under NO circumstances could ANYTHING come in contact with my chest, stomach, thighs or feet!!!owwwwww Okokok! Sooooo,,,today,,,to the shop,,,(hearafter to be known as "The Oven"), I finally learned the joys of working with Weldwood Plastic Resin Cement ("pot life" and "working time on wood" are two MAJORLY different things!_ However, sweat soaked, sawdust covered, back-ached, fingers stuck,,,I still managed to climb into my truck afterwards with a giant smile on my face! It's good to know I have experts handy both on-line and within a reasonable distance if anything gets too hairy. I suspect progress here will be of the slow and steady type. Inga will not be working for the next year or longer, so that takes a big bite out of the discretionary-funds department. Also, I had a decent callback last night and if I get cast in "Odd Couple" that will take a bite out of time. In the spring, "Camelot" comes along. Oh, well... Puget Sound isn't going anywhere and I've lived without a sailboat since about 1978 so I guess a bit longer won't hurt. By the way, Barry, would it be possible for me to run up to your neighborhood and get a look at Spirit Wind? Seeing John's Fire Escape was a huge help in envisioning what I'm headed for and comparing different interpretations of the same concept couldn't hurt. Quote

It is hanging on its side from the rafters in a storage unit until the eye Dr. says it is OK for me to go back to work on it. So it is a little difficult to access. That was the only way that my kids could be relatively secure in the knowledge that I wouldn't be trying to do things that I'm not supposed to be doing right now. Hopefully the next surgery(s) will go as planned and the results will be as hoped. Then I should be able to get back to work on it later this fall. Ready for Spring launch. Quote
