What are your thought on using 3/8' for all Lines???as opposed to 5/16' I know It's a bit bigger, But I got a good deal on Coils of 3/8( a good deal meaning free ) That stuff Is actually used for pull cord for heavy duty chain saw and lawn mower.It as little to no strech and water resistant. Bob Taylor Posted June 24, 2003 Posted June 24, 2003 I used 3/8" for the main halyard, jib halyard and the main sheet. The rest are 5/16". Could have used smaller line on the jib halyard but 3/8" line is easier on the hands, and if the forestay ever parts, 3/8" line should hold for a good while. I used double braided nylon and whipped eyes in the ends with fids to clean thing up. If you've never tried this, it's amazing to see the line "eat" itself to form an eye. Takes patience though, I had a big scrap pile after just one attempt!! Quote

If you can, it makes it very nice to have the halyards and sheets different colors. When you have guests aboard you just have to tell them "pull on the red line or let out the blue line". I don't think the 3/8" line would be too big to handle. Quote
TexasPhil Posted June 24, 2003 Posted June 24, 2003 Wow, I would be curious to see a lawn mower that requires 3/8" starting cord. Everything I have ever seen is more like 1/8. Nelson is right, the color coding is quite nice. I plan on taking it a bit further.... white with red for the jib halyard, red for the jib sheet. white with blue for the main halyard, blue for the sheet, etc. A thicker main sheet would be good, as it is constantly in my hand, larger is easer to grip.
