  1. Thank you so much for the feedback and help guys. Just in case anyone in future is curious, based on the advice I'm going to: Not stain Not stain I'm thinking maybe 1/4 to 1/2 in for breasthook - likely will glue on top as feathering the gunnels looks hard and I'm not sure if I like the look better. Oil w/ rag but leave in sun Will not oil separately - guess I was being overly cautious Can't find rust-oleum - will see what else I can find. I can maybe order it on Amazon from USA BUT what if I need more on short notice, I'd rather use something I can find locally. Euro blade it is for now, likely something cheap from Amazon to get a feel for it. Then I can make a new one in wood this winter when I have tons more time. Thwarts I'm still going back and forth on. I might have to make a call when I get the boat closer to shape. I hadn't even thought of Vinyl fencing. I have easy access to brass and wood so we'll see where I get. Jeff have you thought of starting a wiki on the site? I'd be happy to contribute or help you set it up if you decide to go down that route. There is a wealth of knowledge on the forums and I'd love to see it consolidated. And Andy thanks very much for going in full depth. It was very helpful! I've been nervous about getting the actual assembly started and have done absolutely everything else but I finally started the frame assembly last night.
  2. Ended up ordering the monel ones with the divergent end (finally found the term from an Arrow rep on the Home Depot site). Will update on how they are. Was going to buy the galvanized ones but couldn't find them in Canada's Home Depot or on Amazon so there's that.
  3. Thanks everyone for really helping with answering my questions (my many questions!). I promise I post a full write-up summarizing everything I learned as this was my first real woodworking project and post pictures. I just had a few (hopefully final) questions on the stonefly canoe: I bought WRC - I would like to get the baltic birch ply to match the WRC with a stain - any stains that would make em match? I would prefer to leave the WRC unstained. Or am I just being crazy and I can leave it? I'm thinking, WRC for gunnels/stringers, baltic birch for frames, ash for seat and thwarts, maybe walnut or cherry for breasthooks - that is a lot of different colours. Is that going to look fine oiled or should I be trying to stain some of it to match? How thick of a wood is needed for breasthooks? So I'm just (maybe) staining the wood and then oiling it with a rag? Thats it? Anything else I should be doing? plywood maybe twice? I'm doing a dry fit first with the frames and the stringers, then removing the stringers and oiling everything first and then assembling it - read a few other people that did that - seem ok? What exactly am I using on the fabric? Can I get a link just so that I buy the exact right thing? I went to home depot yesterday and there was a million choices and I left a bit overwhelmed. Paddle - what kind of paddle would be ideal? I know a lot of people like the greenland style but I'm an avid canoeist and I've always used a single blade paddle. I' m happy to try the double blade but what exactly would be the ideal shape/type of paddle for this canoe? Thwarts - a lot of people seem to be placing them below the gunnels - I was going to place them between the inwales. Is that ok? Has anyone tried bending a wooden rubstrip instead of brass? Sound like a bad idea given the sharp angle? I have the assembly manual but some of the stuff seems to assume some knowledge which I don't have and the internet makes a million suggestions which makes it a bit confusing at times. If this turns out well, maybe next year I can try the expedition 2 person canoe Jeff just released. And maybe a kayak for myself...i might be developing a problem.
  4. Damn - alright how about these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Arrow-Fastener-T50-Type-3-8-in-Leg-x-3-8-in-Crown-Galvanized-Steel-Staples-1-250-Pack-506/100055916 Those have the tapered ends. Those are 3/8ths but I can also get them in 5/16ths, 1/4, 7/32. Then there is the Monel ones with chiseled ends: https://www.amazon.ca/Arrow-508M1-Genuine-Rustproof-000-Pack/dp/B00166NCGG I suspect from my research and your notes, I should go with the monel - is 1/2 OK? And if you are having difficulty finding monel chisel staples: https://www.amazon.com/Arrow-508M1-Genuine-Rustproof-000-Pack/dp/B00166NCGG The Q&A states:
  5. Hey guys on the website and the book Jeff mentions staples with a tapered end. Are these the right ones? I just found them randomly and only one pack in the store. I've been looking around and these are all I've found. This is for the stonefly canoe.
  6. I was able to peel the stuff off again and will use proper 3M adhesive spray next time and clean the surface better to ensure a better stick. I really wish the templates came in a slightly stiffer material. Would have preferred to trace them on the plywood and cut. Right now I'm sticking these to 1/4" (I think, cant remember) ply ($12 in cost - love wood costs in Ottawa, Canada). I will make templates and then trace them on the 1/2" baltic birch. If I ever want to build a second I can just pay the second boat fee and not have to do the paper gluing again.
  7. So ended up buying two 30 cm x 30 cm pieces. Fit snug and almost no waste :) - unfortunately I used LePage spray adhesive and the plans didn't stick perfectly to the board so I'm struggling with that at the moment but It should be OK. I assume a few mm isn't going to be world ending (right?). I've used painter's tape to keep things stuck down.
  8. What would you recommend if I wanted to add a brass rub strip later? Can I staple it for now? Or must I stich it? If I stich it can I still put on a rubstrip later?
  9. That is perfect! Thank you! I have a Jigsaw (i figured its a solid investment) as I was able to find a very nice used one. I would like to build another canoe (or maybe even venture into Kayak land - maybe .... i do love canoes, we'll see). So the jigsaw made sense. I've managed to secure access to a pickup BUT coordinating the time is going to be very tough so I might still need to try a split piece of plywood. I called the distributor here and they are willing to have a look at the plans and cut the ply so that there is minimal waste. I guess an advantage of a local small business - the service (same can be said for Jeff and Kudzo :D). And thanks - so the boat is just under 15 - recommended is 16 then and JUST to be safe I'll get 17 feet, I can always use the fabric in other places around the house/other projects. Shipping to Canada is pricey and so likely best to spend a few dollars than ship it twice because it borked it up.
  10. Hmmm fair enough - and for the fabric - what length - how much should I buy? Also I built the stands and the strongback today. Very excited Thanks again! As much as I would like to buy one - the canoe build is going to maybe be all I can afford for a bit - can only buy things little at a time.
  11. And the two 2.5x5 pieces were ok for building your canoe? I have a Honda fit. It's trunk is massive but not big enough for a 5x5.
  12. Hi Folks, I'm trying to build the stonefly and things are coming along nicely. I think I've even found a real Baltic birch locally! Well they may need to order it but it's definitely the real deal. My only problem is that it's 5x5 and will not fit in any vehicle I have. What size pre-cuts can I ask them to make so that it fits in my car? They are willing to do rough cuts for free but I don't know what size I can get cuts for. I might be willing to buy a second board simply because renting a larger car would be half the cost of another board and be terribly inconvenient. I was also going to buy the fabric for the stonefly - how much do I need from the store? Much appreciate your help! Very very excited to start seeing the boat take shape
  13. Quick question if you don't mind. How did you screw in the brass strip? Did you screw it into the plywood directly? And is the strip from the kudzo store? Thanks!
