You certainly have a point Paul. I'm a bit biased. I have a number of friends who are Kiwis and think they're a great bunch of guys. I think it's a shame the rules allow crews to be made up with so many members from other countries. If that were the case in the Olympics we could just hire the best in the world and always win everything. The cup has meant a lot to New Zealand, financially as well as pride. Loosing it is one thing, having their team bought out from under them seems to change things a bit. It looks like the Kiwi boat is a bit faster, but the second string isn't quite up to beating the best in the world.

Guys! we're dealing with AVERAGE intelligence here. These are the same people that elected our presidents and haven't done a very good job of it since FDR!

Brent, The seakeeping ability of my boat is quite impressive. I have noticed, however, that when I sail 30 miles straight into a 20 knot breeze with three feet plus seas, I get wet. The self bailers work fine and unload a lot of the water that comes in as spray I think you might consider keeping the deck at the same height and extending the seating area a bit forward. I'm thinking of adding a short bowsprit for my Bruce anchor. I know good reasons for keeping weight out of the ends of the boat, but we're only moving it a foot or two and the added convenence and even safety are attractive. Since I usually sail short-handed, (me) I like the idea of being able to drop the anchor when I've screwed up all of my other options.

Any time any one of the six legs takes over 45 minutes the race has to be abandoned. It would be rather stupid to start a race when conditions are such that there is little hope the FIRST leg will be completed in time.

There's still plenty of time for the black boat to win five races.

Wow, If I HAD rigging, I think I'd consider deadeyes. That knot looks like the one used for tying down airplanes. ...........................(Is it legalto use an 'airplane knot' on a sailboat?)

It seems only a boat full of Kiwis can beat the Kiwi boat. Sure would like to see En Zed win one.......................or five.

This is my 1936 Austin Nippy. My friend's mother bought it new and when I got it it had 3315 miles on it. These pictures were taken when I just got it last year, before I noticed the springs had eased to the point of uselessness. On the areas that are invisable I use epoxy. If they're barely visable you may use some white pigment. (I've been meaning to try that) Scuff the edges if you're going to epoxy it in place. ..................................................................or you could use latex

Ricardo, first, weigh the kid fore and aft. If his head seems heavy you're probably holding him wrong. Chances are the problem is with the rigging. Ballast may appear unexpectedly. Remove the ballast immediately! This will improve the attitudes of both you and the child. Occasionally the child will leak. Do not be alarmed. These leaks are normal and, for the most part, are self-sealing. If you having any problems, just remember, we're always here to help.

Seems to me I DID notice something about a baby........

I set my seat sides outboard about an inch and used a 1x2 seat stringer on the inboard side of the side. This made the seat about 1 inch wider. (I need that with my seat) Also, it gives an overhang that I store my sprits under.

My trailer is galvanized. The tongue is heavy. I used to have a swivel-wheel on the tongue, but now have one that also is a jack. I CAN lift the tongue to hook-up to the car, but just barely. Of course, I'm very strong....and handsome too. Like Joe says, too light is worse than too heavy.

The wheels on my trailer are 80 inches forward of the transom. They could be farther forward, but I can walk around on the boat while it's on the trailer and not have the bow suddenly pointing at the sky.

I grew up in Michigan and actually learned to sail in Ontario. I love the way Canadians recite the alphabet: A....A?, B....A?, C....A? D....A?........

Gee guys, I just used a cheap old Craftsman and used the blade that came with it. It worked great. I think the saber saw would be too much work and wouldn't do as good a job. You will, however , get plenty of chances to use it.

Rob, Since my boat was intended for flats fishing I built a casting deck at seat height that extends to about 2 1/2 feet aft of the stem. That leaves the side decks and a small fordeck. I also cut the freeboard down 3" to make it easier to get in and out of the boat and to cut down on windage when poleing. I added a forward forward bulkhead that has an opening to give access to a self-draining anchor well. I wish I hadn''t cut down the freeboard and I would probably make the foredeck larger if I were to do it again. I don't think I'd have the deck as large as the plans. It's nice to be able to walk forward to the foremast and still be in the boat. HOWEVER, I've been in weather where I certainly would have liked the freeboard and fordeck. I like my forward forward bulkhead with the forward bulkhead cut down to seat height, except at the sides of course. I cut down the forward bulkhead and attached a piece of 1x6 across the top to keep it's shape during construction. With a low dodger you would have a place where the kids could get out of the weather and keep spray out in heavy weather. Also, I'd go with 9mm for the standing deck and seat tops. I'm quite a bit larger than Graham and he can get by just fine with the 6mm. I intend to go sailing this weekend. I'll take more pictures.

Brent, When sailing, and the boat is heeling,... TURN.....THE.....MOTOR....OFF! Ok, I'm a smart a$$. Just couldn't resist. I STILL lean toward the short-shaft with the lifting, spring-loaded mount, but I'm sure either would work.

Joe, I have gotten along for over five years with oars, however, I've been thinking of a motor. Most of the guys I sail with use a Honda 2hp 4-stroke on their Sea Pearls. The Seapearl is narrower, but longer (21ft) and weighs much more than my CS17. You probably won't get hull speed, but you rarely get hull speed when sailing. I think you'd like the dependability, quiet, and smoothness. Also, instead of a long shaft I think I'd prefer a smaller short shaft with the pull-up mount. If you followed the plans, (I didn't) the motor will fit in the lazarette. Gordy

Nelson, Sounds great! On my 17ft Silhouette the weather helm didn't show up until the wind got to about 12 to 15 knots. At that point I would reef the main. (rolled around the boom) The boat would sit up and sail much better and the weather helm would be gone. I've never had much luck with roller reefing. It's great for storing the sail, but I just never got the nack of making it work well when reefed. I'd be interested to hear how it works with more wind and wether you find it better to reef the jib or main. Gordy
