I have the same questions about filling my CS20 mast with foam. This should increase safety by decreasing the chance of turning turtle during a capsize.

I have been hoping someone would test the CS 20. I was concerned that one person might not be able to right the boat after a capsize. If I might ask, how much weight did it take to right the boat? How much difference would a 20 knot wind with the associated waves have made? Do you think that the boat would have finally turned completely upside down and how long do you think it would have taken? Would a full load of gear made much of a difference? Anyway, that is a fine looking boat.

Well, I finally got a price quote on the flag poles. After 2 e-mails with no response, I called. The 22 ft pole is 27 pounds, which I figure is not too bad. I calculated a finished weight of 20 pounds for the 6061-T6 called out in the plans. The price was $295 each with me picking them up at their place of business, twice as much as the cost I have seen on this and other post for the mast made per the plans. This is way out side my budget. I guess that I will be going with the 3 section mast per the plans.

Terry, thanks for the info, but how did you connect two 3 inch sections into the 12 ft section of 3 inch tubing called out in the plans?

Would 6063-T6 with 0.095 walls be OK for my CS 20 mast? I am located about 30 miles from a local supplier. This is a tapered flag pole that is in 3 sections, total length of 22 feet, with the lower 3 feet not tapered. The pole has a 3 inch butt and tapers to 1.875 at the top. How much more would this weigh than the 6061-T6 listed in the plans? I plan on using sail tracts so need a tapered mast.

I have had the plans for almost a year now and am finally ready to start construction. I plan on working on a 3 station cradle this weekend. Hopefully next week I will get the plywood ordered, am still price shopping. Nothing local (north Alabama) that I can find, looks like it will have to be mail ordered. I have been studying the plans off and on for the last year. I think that I understand the instructions, except for the note on the Hull Panel Instructions that indicates

Scott Yes, we love this area also. Possibly getting together for lunch sounds good, except that I am starting a new job over in North Alabama before the end of this year. The new job will allow me to have 3 days off every weekend. I am planning on using the CS20 as a project to keep me busy on my off time since the wife will be staying here. I am hoping to spend about 16 hours every weekend working on the CS20 and hope to have it finished within 9 months. But since this will be my first boat, I don't have anything to based that on.

I just sent for the CS20 plans. This will be my first attempt at building a boat. I was going to try something smaller, but when finished, anything smaller would not be enough boat for me. My sailing experience has all been in keelboats with cabins, so I have a question. Most of the time I expect to be sailing by myself, but I have a wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, two 13 year old grand daughters, one 7 year old grand son and one 5 year old grand daughter. At some point, some or all of these will be sailing with me. On an open boat like the CS20 with a mixed crew, how do you handle the privacy issue with the john?
