No, no, no. The only thing you want to depend on is the strap. Start on one side of the car, go over the boat, pull the strap under the kayak back toward the side you started. Then back over the top of the boat and then to the other side of the car. That makes a choker around the boat that pulls it downward and it will not allow it to slide sideways as long as the strap is snug. BTW I cringe when I see you mention ratchet straps too. They can crush the boat. YOu just need snug straps, not tight! Quote

I'm running the 58" bars in my rack setup. My 17' sea kayak goes in Yakima Land Shark Saddles, and the other two kayaks are in J-style cradles. I've also still got room for one bike on the roof, even with 3 kayaks. Matt Quote
