Bcone1381 Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Is there a kayak design for light weight adults with little kayak experience? My wife is 5'7", and 110 pounds. I would like to build a second kayak with good stability characteristics at her weight without adding ballast. I understand that Because of the various degrees of rocker of kayak designs, poor handling characteristics with light weight paddlers can result. How would Ravenswood work out at the 110 to 120 pound catagory paddler? Quote

Christopher Cunningham's book is unique in its way to figure the length-width of a kayak to a person's size. Has to do with adding the width of 2 of your fists to the width of a person's hips and I think you're height time 3 if I'm not mistaken to get the length... Which amazingly paralleled my last build using kayak foundry and it is a very stable kayak.... In a quite more tippy kayak you go with one fist width added to your hips width....I think..I'd have to dig out my book... Quote
Kudzu Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 That would probably be the best choice. Stability isn't as much an issue as tracking would be be. Looking at the water line at150 lbs it's rather shallow but both ends are submerged. Worst case would be you find you need to add a small skeg on the back. That is actually pretty easy to do. Quote
