Jack Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Hi All, Just about finished my Spindrift 12 and was wondering about your thoughts on oar lengths. In the plans it suggests an oar length of 6 to 6.5 feet but the guy at my local boat shop said that you would probably want about 8 feet. I am now confused and after some input from people who have rowed one of these little boats. Thanks . Jack. Quote
okie geo Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Jack, A good rule of thumb is that oars should be 2x the width of the boat. That puts 2/3rds of the oar outside the boat and 1/3rd inside. So if you have a boat 4' wide, you'd have 8' oars. In use, 2' will be inside the boat and 6' will be sticking out. Quote
