CS20 Sail dimensions

I have been playing with a trimaran design and I have my hulls designed subject to the inevitable tweaking that will go on till I start to build it. I have been looking at sail rigs trying to decide what I want. My first thought was find an existing boat and buy it for the rigging. But the more I have researched and thought on it the more I lean toward the cat-ketch rig.

I actually bought plans for the CS-20 about 8 years ago and a large part of the interest was the rig. My interest went to kayaks and I sold the plans a few years back.

Now that I am looking at sailing again I come back the this rig. The CS 20 'seems' to be a good match and there is a lot of experience to draw from on setting it up. No sense reinventing the wheel or spending a lot of money and finding out it doesn't work as expected!

All that to ask if someone could give me the outside dimension on the CS-20 sails? I want do some playing around and see if and how they would work on this boat. And if I need to make any changes.

Also, anyone know the ball part costs of a set of sails? BALL PARK is good enough. I checked the site but they don't list the sail on the web site and I know they do sell them.

Come on, someone can look at the sail plan give me the 3 dimension on each sail. It's not like I am asking for trade secrets or trying to steal a set of plans.

Hi Jeff,

I can't locate my CS 20 plans sail plan page, but I do have the sail plan for the Bellhaven. I mention this as I will be using my sails from my CS 20 on the Bellhaven I plan on building. The dimensions are just a bit off, but close enough thatthe CS 20 race sails will work just as well as the Bellhaven stock sails will.

Main has a luff of 17' 8 " and a leach of 17' 11 38" and a foot of 8' 6"

Mizzen has a luff of 15' 3" a leach of 15' 8 3/8"

and a foot of 7' 1"

I can't see where you would save all that much using stock sails as opposed to having Graham order you sails specifically to your needs though.

I bet Graham and Carla would be happy to help you with either sails or a sail plan and sails.

Perhaps I've missunderstood you intentions. Are you really planning on doing a cat ketch version on a kayak/ trimaran? and you want to use the rig from a CS20? I've seen the rigs that they put up on most of the kayak/trimarans they seem much smaller than what you are planing.

I just had the designer at SailRite design a kit for a set of CS20 sails. If you have access to a decently strong sewing machine, you can get the kit, sew it yourself and save a quite a few bucks.

Sort of, maybe, yes..... Don't want to give away all my secrets just yet. It's not really a kayak hull but it is similar. Kayaks hulls are just too low to the water and make for a really wet ride in any kind of a chop. The more I looked the more disadvantages I saw. So I decided to start from scratch.

As for sails, yes, I am considering the cat ketch rig. Yes it is much larger than kayaks use, but I am not copying what everyone else has done either. I have always heard "if you do what you have always done, you get what you have always gotten."

Well they say that art and genius and madness are tied together.... I think I'd put in a few reef points. You might consider doing Polytarp sails for your prototype. You could get a complete set of sails for right around a hundred dollars.

I do like your boats. You've a good eye. I bought your book, very instructive. I very much enjoyed understanding a building style so different from what I have practiced. I may build one.

RAY, thanks again. I drew up the sails and did some math so I can compare these to other ideas. The thing I like about these is it is a proven design. The sail area is very close to what I had in mind s I wanted to see if they might be a good choice. And if I have questions about rigging there are a lot of people with experience right here.
