Ed Jones Posted April 16, 2003 Author Posted April 16, 2003 Mike a solarvent is a sun powered vent that exaust moist air from your boat while it is not in use to hold down mildew. It is a small electric motor powered by a solarcell all built into a compact unit that mounts on the top deck. Quote

Bill Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 I'm not sure but I think they are a Dutch company. The few products I have seen seem to deal mostly with houses and gardens. While these products may stand up to the Marine environment, I might check out just how the vent you are going to get mounts, or you might find yourself using some real inginuity to make it leak proof. I would think you would have to research on just what climate you plan on using it and how much air you really have to move to keep the moisture out. I suppose any movement is good, but it depends on what you really want. I have seen small fans for as little as 25.00 bucks that look cheap, up to the 100.00 plus versions made specifically for boats. Most of West Marines vents are over $100.00. I think they are a good idea but on our traditional looking boats I would be trying to hide the circular space-age look of these things. Possibly a nice wood dorade box, or a small brass cowl vent on deck would do the trick. One thing I have been interested in is solar, for lights, radios, vents etc., but The cost can run pretty high and I hate the look of big solar panels out on the boat. In our neck of the woods (Maine) it may be tough to get all the sunlight needed to be truly efficiant. The nice thing is, that with the Internet there is quite a bit of info available out there to learn the basics. Bill Quote
