Thanks for getting my packet to me despite tornadoes in your back yard Jeff! I don't have a table saw so what would you suggest for scarfing my stringers? I was thinking of marking a 60 deg angle either side of the offensive chunk and sawing it out...I have a LN small rip that should work well? Thanks! Jim Quote
Kudzu Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 One of the simplest ways is to lay two stringers side by side and clamp them together. Then mark the angle across both pieces and cut them at the same time with a hand saw. That should give you a pretty good mated surface depending on your skill with the saw of course. You might have to touch them up with some sandpaper or a hand plane to get a good mated surface which is critical to strength of the joint. That is just one method, but there are lots of clever ideas out on the internet. Best advice I can give you is practice on some scrap! Creak the joint and see what happens. The glue joints should stay in tack and wood break if you did it right. I am pretty sure that the angle is more the 60 degrees. You want a ratio of at least 8 to 1 Quote
