ecgossett Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I know this topic has been discussed before, but I've been offered a Beachcomber 25' in good shape, decent sails, new rigging and rails, etc for a grand. Inboard diesel... In a previous posts some concerns where expressed over the way the masts roll and the wishbone hooked up. Any thoughts on this boat? I was thinking it might be a good family boat, I like the way the sails roll up, and the masts seemed pretty easy to step in, and going all the way down into the boat adds some safety strength to the masts. Does anyone have any experience with this boat? I'm thinking this is a good opportunity that I should jump at. V/R, Edward Quote
Designer Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Edward, If it touches your heart strings, how could go wrong for a grand? There are some bargains out there if you are willing to put in the elbow grease. Sometimes though there is more effort than meets the eye so try and get someone that is not emotionally involved to go over it rationally with you. It could be a jewel or a lump of coal. Quote
PAR Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 This is a lot of boat if you're not used to anything but beach boats. Over two and a half tons of boat. Is yours the stub keel/centerboard or the centerboard version? They built enough to work the bugs out, do you have a hull number? I've heard some interesting stories about mast stepping. Will the boat be stored in the water? I have the same reservations as Graham, in that a boat like this can have a host of hidden issues that will haunt you. Is there a skilled and trusted person you can bring along for an inspection? At this price, it seems difficult to go wrong, but I've eaten enough boats over the years to know what to walk away from. ecgossett Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 I've had experience with big boats... This boat has a mini keel, and then the drop down centerboard... It sort of reminds me of the 2008 trailer-able hunter 25' but with a drop-down centerboard included (which would have improved everything on the hunter). Quote
