Introducing Myself

Hi All,

I am getting ready to start a build of a Seaclipper 24 DS with my sons (17, 14, and 4) this fall and wanted to introduce myself.  My name is Jim Richardson and I am located in central VA, have been looking for a good project to accomplish with my sons.

Our goal is to start the build process in the fall of 2010 and launch in the spring of 2011.  The Seaclipper 24 Day Sailor is designed by John Marples and Jim Brown.  This model seems to be a very robust and relatively simple design to build (famous last words  :shock:).  My main technical concern is getting the Akas right and the Seaclipper uses a really strait forward design that should be great for camp cruising (i.e. low pressure use) and easily maintained.

We particularly like the designer, Jim Brown; he has a wealth of knowledge and is really enthusiastic when it comes to Trimarans.  My sons and I feel very privileged to have met and had the opportunity to speak with Jim over the last few years on several occasions.  We currently own another of Jim

Hi Jim ... I fixed the link in your post (it had a trailing period that was causing it to break; part of the problem with the way the forum handles URLs). 

I like the swing arms on the amas to trailer it.  Looks like a pretty simple solution.  We have a local guy with a tri that has arms that articulate up to pull the amas closer to the hull, and it is a lot more complicated than it looks to launch and fold the thing back up.  He's got it down to a science now.  These things are wicked fast and fun to be on.

Thanks for fixing the link.  The Akas on this design are what sold us on the Seaclipper.  Sent an e-mail to John Marples about getting plans for the DS version, we are excited.

Did you build the Windrider 17?  Or will this be your first build?

It looks like it is fairly straight forward, and if the designer is available for consultation that's a big plus!  Also, if you can find someone who has built one already you can often get very good advice from them.

We're always willing to chime in here with general information the "crowd sourced knowledge" here can be pretty good.

Hi Frank,

This will be the first build for us.  I did hear back from John Marples and he said that the Seaclipper 24 is targeted to first time builders.  The plans are very extensive and there are full scale patterns for some of the panels and bulkheads. 

In reading through information from others that have used John's plans in the past, they said that John supplies great plans and both Jim and John are more than willing to answer questions, etc...

The WindRider 17 is a production roto-molded trimaran that was designed by Jim Brown.
