Sail between Main and Mizzen

Say - first post here. Herb is building Lapwing #7 for me. We don't live far from each other in NC. I'm not much of a builder I just get what ever it is to function and then I'm done. Boat building looks to be one of those arts that requires a good eye and a desire to make it look just right. Anyway, I see this on the side view of Lapwing drawings and have seen pictures of a CS17 with a head sail between the main and mizzen? What's it called and would you add this sail to the lapwing as it is on the CS17's?

Hi Dean. Great to meet you and congrats on your new Lapwing.

That's a mizzen stay sail. In light air, it's a great sail.  But, in the heavy winds I sail in, I'd probably never use it.

  I heard a rumor there was a Lapwing under construction in or around Durham.  Is that yours?

  I love my mizzen staysail, but I don't use it often.  I don't know if anyone has used one on a lapwing yet.

Hey, Ken - yes we are building in Durham Lapwing #7. In the meantime I'm down to one sailboat a Roger Crawford Melonseed which I'm presently compounding the haze out of the green hull.

Light air for this sail you say - hmm - perfect for NC summers.

  I'm in Durham too so you'll see me on Jordan Lake (But not today - Cold!)

  I don't know if Graham has drawn a mizzen staysail for Lapwing.  If not, you could look at the CS17 staysail (mine), the CS20 staysail (I think you might know the Stewarts) and come up with your own.  We could also temporarily rig mine on your boat to see what changes woud need to be made to fit your boat.

hey Ken, the B&B site for the Lapwing shows the mizzen staysail in dotted line. I've got an email to Carla for ordering up the Lapwing sails but I don't think they include this sail. I'll ask about it this week.

Too cold out there for me until late March I imagine. Hope to see you out there and get some tips on cat ketch sailing.

  If Graham drew in a dotted line for the mizzen staysail he'll likely be happy to have one made for you.  I don't think the staysail would be included with an order for a regular set of sails.

  You'll have to think ahead about installing hardware for the staysail.  When you talk to Graham or Carla about getting one ask them about how to set up the hardware too.

  If we ever have another warm day we could get together at Jordan Lake for a sail.  We might even be able to badger the Stewarts into bringing along their CS20 Dawn Patrol.  Typically we'll get at least one good sailing day a month even in the deepest dark of Piedmont winter but at this point I'm starting to wonder if the ice will ever melt...

I am building Lapwing 4.  I have had a staysail make up for her (there was a deal on when things were slow over our winter so had all my sails made before the hull was even planked up).  Now I have to get on an finish the boat before I can try the sails out.

Richard, looks like you hoist this sail up the mizzen mast. Have you though out your sheets/lines and how you want everything to run? Halyards, sheets, snotters, down hauls...

Haven't got as far as thinking about that yet.  Having rigged and sailed a CS 17 for a couple of years I know what worked well and some of the things I might change.  I did not have enough purchase on the downhaul and snotter on the main sail to trim it effectively.  Also I will rig my main and mizzen sheet like Tom has his on Lapwing 1.
