MickG Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Hi: I have a CS 20 91 and I have mizzen sail problem. As built, the snotter attachnent on mizzen mast was as indicated on the plans. I did verify this spec with Graham. However, when sailing with the sprit on the leeward side of sail, there is a huge "pocket" under the sprit and alongside the mast. Aprox two feet by two feet. I talking to the sail maker, he said to move the attachment down so as to change the thrust of the sprit.I moved it down one foot, and this solved 85% of the problem. There is still a "pocket" buat much smaller.I do realize the by moving the attachment point furthur down, I can eliminate the problem. But why? This would place the attaachmeant at least 18" below the indicated position. Th main sail "sets" fine as designed. Anybody have any ideas???? Thnks, Mick Quote

Tom Lathrop Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 One of the main determinants of snotter and sprit position on the mast is the ability to control leach tension when the wind kicks up and the mast bends. Too low and the leach will fall off too much in a breeze as well as the foot getting too tight. Reading between the lines, it's clear that the stiffness of the mast plays a big part in snotter position. Nothing like sailing the boat a while to get a better fix on it. By affecting the mast bend, even the weight of the hiked out crew is involved in choosing the best position. It's never going to be perfect all the time and the plans are a good place to start. Snotter tension helps to find the best compromise. Quote

I understand that tension of the snotter, downhaul all have an influence on the sail shape.What I don't understand is why is this not problem with main or when the mizzen is on the other tack and the sprit is not touching it. Also, in talking to the sail maker, he was quite upset that the builder had not told him these sails were for sprit set up. He has assumed that they were for loose footed sail on a boom. He id not put a bolt rope on the foot of the sails. He had me send them back and added the bolt rope. No I hear from some people that the sail should not haave abolt rope on the foot.
