Lets build a boat

If anyone of you fine folks are interested in a small runabout boat project here, then I am beginning to build a new larger scale of my 12 footer, simular to the Simmons. I have one son thats without a small hull and has expressed interest in a creeker. So I must replace the 12 with a newer model for mamma and me. So its boring to build the same boat over again. So I am building this new one and hopes it will finish off around 14 foot or a few inches less and plan to use a 9.8 as of now on it. This could change as soon as I get the boat setup on the strongback. It will take a bit longer since its between some updates on my fishing boat, but will update if you folks would like to follow.

The transom is solid veneer mohogany, bookmatched.

The first step is to install the well frames and the bottom frames for the sides. You need to hold the bottom frames square till the caulk dries. And yes I am using PL Window, Door, and Siding sealant for all the parts, except for the laminate of the well faces which will come next.

I mortise the frames and fasten them from the side and from the stern and then will face the bottom part of the transom with regular plywood where you see it bare on the transom shot.

You need to draw up some detailed plans.  I am sure they would sell!

I attempted to locate a NA that would actually do a detailed set for the 12 footer. I quickly found out that no amount of reasonable money would produce the plans. Even at around a quoted price of about 600 bucks, no promise date and as time passed not even a reply to any hope in the future when pressed, as they were too busy for such a project. I was going to actually donate the set to the same group that sells the original plans now. So there we have it. If you have someone that you think maybe interested in doing so, and within reason, there has been some interest.

But I do not have the whats and wheres to do them myself. Also there are numerous issues with some liability and no presidence of numerous past hulls like the original hulls. So therein creates another issue with getting them up and running and babysitting some folks until there are some boats used in the variety of conditions. But as it seems here, there is little interest to amount to anything worth doing some genuine pushing like this while also spending my own the money, I would also be a bit taken back if the plans just sit there collecting dust too.

But as they say at the end of the day, these trivial projects are more for my contentment but would also share to any individual the perimeters of this hull for their personal use down the road without further obligation.

Yep, lots of clamps are require to glue in place the layers which makes the well longer lasting and more structural in the free floating corners. I have used this in the bigger hulls with success long term. I use 4x4 clamping blocks checking the suttle crown to compress the center of the layers.

I incorporate a splash plate which doubles as a planing plate. I taper the edges of the well and also oversize the piece and glue in place. The I allow the bottom to also come across the plate making it more rigid.
