Trial Rigging

Well we got the boat outside yesterday and started rigging the sails. I laced the main on because I could not find mast hoops (PVC couplers) that fit over my hinges. I think I might try loops made out of parrel beads.

We had a slight breeze which was not able to overcome the resistance of the clubfooted jib sheet through the blocks. I may try to reduce the size of this sheet from 3/8" to 1/4" or 3/16", it might go through the blocks easier.

Found lots of new little projects to work on before launching! Still shooting for the first week in June (this year!!)

Yeah I know I may have said that a year or two , (or three) ago

That's one great looking boat, Joel.

3/8" line is overkill for the jib sheet.  You'll notice significant improvement with 1/4" line. 

I have laced my mainsail to the mast for years, and it works just fine.  I have not tried the spiral lacing that you used, but have found the back-and-forth method (posted on this board several times) to be very easy to use.  The trick is to get some very, very pliable line.

Joel, If you want beads, I have a bag full of them. We can also cut some hoops out of ply  and trim them up with my lathe if you would like.  I went with the ply hoops and IMHO it was a big step up from the beads.  Rounded over with a router and sandpaper, soaked in Lind seed oil and buffed out.

How's that splicing going?

Jake, I found some 5" schedule 40 couplers for mast hoops. I will pick them up today along with the rest of the stainless screws I need. I will take you up on the beads for the gaff, thanks.

The splicing is done. I did the eye for the main sheet yesterday. I did have one mishap while splicing a couple of weeks ago. I cut my hand bad enough for a few stitches (actually they used super glue and a splint) that worked out ok but I couldn't move my index finger for about 2 weeks.

I did have a problem with the fid. I got the cover tail tangled up in the core and couldn't get it out. I ended up cutting the core (and the loop on the fid) to get it apart. Found some waxed twine and repaired the fid, good as new  :

Still looking to launch the first week in June, hope you can make it.

I only use a knife to cut the line, after that, I switch to scissor.   Sorry to hear you cut yourself, I haven't done it in years now, as I don't have many more places to have the scars!

I installed my new mast hoops, the smaller jib sheet, and rigged the mainsheet. We're down to a very small punchlist...... should launch on schedule!

The mast hoops are a little big, but the main sure goes up nice and easy. I took one of the blocks out of the jib sheet rig. The line runs much easier. I can't imagine needing the extra purchase with this small jib.
