Outboard for P22

I was persuaded to buy an 8 hp motor not the 6 hp I noticed on the B&B photos, mainly because it was the same weight and not much more expensive. The extra grunt would be welcome in a stiff head wind. It is a Tohatsu, and well regarded here. What I didn't check was the size. It is a lousy 15 mm too long so I had to rout out the clamping beam and reinforce it with glass and epoxy. All is OK now and with the motor in the up position it just fits under the tiller.

Anything bigger would be hopelessly oversize.

What kind of speeds are you getting w/ the Tohatsu?  We put a yamaha 8 on Princess #1 when we rehabbed her this fall.  We were getting about 6 1/2 mph at a fast idle.  The more power applied, the more the stern wanted to squat.  Got a max speed between 7 & 7 1/2.  Had the motor mount tilted as far down as it would go.  This was more than enough speed but could have been achieved w/ a smaller motor.  The 8 had a few more creature comforts than the smaller motors, but not a lot more speed.  Another plus is that it is really quiet.

I have a Yamaha 8, 2 cycle, on Pilgrim and had the same experience of notching out the bottom transom clamp to make the motor fit in the tilted-up position and also the same speed ranges as experienced by John.

I have never had a need to use max throttle, but have had occasion to motor against a pretty stiff headwind with plenty of power in reserve.

I have also had the opportunity to tow other boats and found the extra horsepower to come in handy

FWIW I'll be using an 8 hp 4 stroke honda. The price was right, and standard equipment included the ability to charge batteries. A big plus for me. And quiet.

I had the engine before I finished the motor well so I had the dimensions close at hand. But I appreciate the heads up.

Thanks for the comments - I feel better already. I can't comment on the speed as the boat has not been launched due to a delay with the trailer. Can't wait - very frustrating.
