If your using polytarp it's fairly balanced, meaning the count is even in the warp and fill so just cut with the length of the material or the panel. But I would not recommend cutting and sewing poly tarp as the cut edges will fray very quickly. It's just not made for doing that. The panels they make the larger pieces from are heat welded together. Now some laminate sail materials are made just for radial cut sails something you need not be concerned about on a gaff rig. But many other laminates can be used for cross cut sails as the count is balanced. It really does help if you guys can tell me just what the material is and what the scrim count is. But you want the scrim to be in both the warp [length] and fill [width] of the material. You don't want to use a material that only has scrim in one direction. An X pattern is also fine to use. I will want to put two sets of reef points into my high end nasa quality poly tarp main. My plan WAS to sew in some sort of reinforcing for the grommets. I did have two rows of reefing in my main last year, but only backed up the grommets with lotza duct tape...they burned out in no time. I did a ton of reefed main sailing last year...a very windy year and am hoping for another this year. We have one of those extra excellent Pfaff commercial machines here (one of the nicest things we own) but it is a straight stitch no zigg zaggin. Could we sew something in there that will work? HA!! I love this, asking a high quality professional sail maker how to make poly sails. HAhahahahah. Sorry. :oops: I absoflaminlutly guarendamntee that when I get a real main I will be coming to you PJ. I am thinking of changing the sail plan shape some and want to experiment with the poly version first before comitting to a biaxial radial kevlar carbon fibre gaff racing sail.
