Shot or long shaft?

For a CS17, should I use a long (20 in.) or short (15 in.) shaft, my transom length is approx. 18 in.

I vote long shaft.

The other thing you must consider is the bottom rocker to the hull...this makes the shaft length needed even longer than the transom measurements indicate. I had a short shaft and went to a long. Now the water intake doesnt come out of the water when I am in the front of the boat or when lightly loaded.

When an outboard is on a transom bracket it is kind of like being on a see-saw. In choppy seas the outboard can be lifted quite high. So even if it doesn't seem needed during light/no air weather a long shaft stays in the water better in waves. You won't regret your decision.
