I don't quite follow how this sail is rigged. Could someone please explain what is up with the small line leading up through the grommets on the sail luff and out the throat?

Noel, that line attached the throat of the sail to the gaff throat. It's not the way I do it but I've seen it that way before. Might be in the plans for the Weekender. If I remember correctly the clew of the sail as shown in the plans shows a similar thing.

I would suspect that line is the beginning of the lacing of the head to the gaff.

It looks like it would suffer some pretty serious chafing, running up through the gaff jaws like that.
