Scarfing -- 3/8 to 1/4 overlap

CS 20 hull #85 is on the way. With Graham's advice, the scarfing is going fine. But, a question arises:

When scarfing the 3/8" plywood bottom on the CS 20 to fit with the 1/4" bow, do you fit the 1/4 on the 3/8 outside flush or do you match them in some other manner?

Definitely make it flush on the OUTSIDE of the boat. If you let that scarf be flush on the interior, you'll have the step up showing on the outside and a BIG fairing job to do.

This sounds so simple and obvious but stuff happens. Some years ago Graham and I were building a quick and dirty boat in the Sika Callenge contest at Georgetown, SC.

The two guys next to us were blazing away at great speed and blew their completion whistle at about 1 1/2 hours. Problem is, they had cut out two port side panels. We have all seen twisted boats but this was a new record. The bow went port and the stern went starboard.

Make sure you have the scarfing layout prominently marked with P and S (check it about 4 times) so you can't screw up.

The step is going to be hidden inside, under the forward seat top. All you have to do is scribe the bottom shap and step into the four inside stringers that add support to the 1/4" ply and joint.
