Compass purchase

ok, so I am looking to add a compass to my boat. What do I look for? how much is a decent compass going to cost me? Any brands I should favor? or avoid?

What about an electronic compass? do they work?

I would avoid anything which requires batteries or power for the boat's compass. On my Catalina 22 and on my current boat, the Laguna Balboa, the installation location determined that the compass needed to be a bulkhead mount. I learned the hard way that it must be able to be read from the helm position, so I went with 4 inch and edge card read. The night light is a nice option too. I also carry my old trusty Scout compass, and a GPS unit, on board.
