Insurance for the Micr Trawler

I spoke with my local insurance agent about getting coverage for the Micro Trawler. I was informed that they do not cover HOME MADE boats! I told him that home made boats are stronger, safer, and much better looking than a store bought one, but that did not help. And they have no idea where I may be able to get insurance if I can get it at all.

Hence the question, any ideas about a company or agent that would write coverage on a home made boat?

I will try to post some photos of the progress later today. I have been spending a fair amount of time with a couple things like work and getting a daughters wedding planned, and that has not left a lot of time for staying in touch with you all.

This comes up every now and then. Insurance agents run away from "home built" boats. Sometimes you can get a rider on your homeowner's or renter's insurance for liability and property damage insurance, which covers you if you damage someone else's boat by running into it, etc. For most homebuilt boats, at least the kind we build here, that's the only kind of insurance we really need.

While we place a pretty high value on our boats, from an insurance standpoint they aren't worth much. Probably just the value of the materials. If there's an active used market for the MicroTrawler you might have a better chance of getting coverage in case its stolen or damaged.

Even on my production Potter 19 sailboat I don't have full boat insurance. I do have a rider on my homeowner's insurance that applies my liability limits to accidents on the water. It was inexpensive because I have just a 5 hp auxilliary motor; your MicroTrawler might have a higher amount because of a larger motor, and the fact that it is the primary propulsion.
