Andrew - not a bad idea really - i have a life jacket for her but have worried about her getting out of the boat and how i would get her back into it...on the shore i just lift her (it is a ridiculous sight i am sure) but if she were in the water it would be terrible...the life jacket would keep her up but it isn't a situation that i would ever want to be in --

I imagine any of the techniques used to get a person back onboard would work pretty well for a dog as well.

Dogs should, in fact, be easier since most dog-vests are designed for lifting as well. Use the topping lift to raise your boom up a bit and swing it out over the side of the boat. Now unshacke the mainsheet from the lazerette, and attach to the dog's vest. That will give you 3:1 purchase to lift the dog up out of the water. Once the dog is high enough, swing her over the boat.

But then again, I own a Yorkie. All I need is a fishing net.

Reminds me of my favorite dog-overboard story. Here in WA state, a guy's dog fell off the ferry. They guy was worried the ferry crew wouldn't stop to rescue a dog. But he figured they WOULD stop to rescue him, so over he went.

Some state official announced on TV that evening "Yes, we DO send out a crew to rescue pets that have fallen overboard, so you don't need to jump in after your pet." heh heh heh

that is a good idea toO Noel -- i am afraid i would be silly enough to jump in after her.... she is 168 lbs but would be cooperative if she were scared....she is only lump when she is relaxed and happy - otherwise she is one huge mass of muscle and teeth. She can jump up on the pool deck at the house (about 3 feet - quite an accomplishment for such a large earthbound breed) i think next time we go -- we will practice dog overboard techniques...

Rumor has it that Captain Bill Olney of the BYYB bunch has volunteered to assist with the man (dog) overboard drill. Indeed, according to the rumor, Bill would even allow himself to fall into the water and be appropriately rescued, just so the dog might see how everything is suppose to work.

I even spoke with my own dog about such a maneuver, explaining to her in detail about the rumor, about Bill Olney, and about the rescue procedure. My dog assured me that Bill Olney would need to be dunked several times. My dog also assured me that no dog would laugh at the maneuver rescue lesson, at least in public. My dog said, in private, however, the whole notion would be a howl.
