dstgean Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Graham, Thanks so much for all your help on the Ulua Hawaiian outrigger project. It is coming along well as I not have the hull mostly complete, iakos done, and the amas in the fairing stage. Just curious what you think about a couple of topics. 1. When reefing should I use the downhaul on the reefing tack grommet or install a reef hook on the mast and use the halyard? 2. When setting up the snotter, I was thinking of putting a dowel in the clew end of the sprit. Should the sprit poke through the clew grommet or just the webbing. Further, is the reef point rigged differently since there is no webbing there? How do I bundle the clew end of the sail when reefed? 3. To allow some flexibility of raising or lowering the sprit angle I was thinking of attaching a spinnaker track to the front of the mast and using a spin car with ring to hook the snotter to the mast end. Then I can use the plunger style pin to adjust the snotter angle. thoughts? Quote
dstgean Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 I thought with the sprit boom experts here at the B & B site I'd get at least one response...perhaps I worded it wrong. Does anyone have advice for setting up the sprit as in the first post? Thanks, Dan St. Gean Quote
Designer Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Dan, 1. Use a downhaul. The halyard has no purchase, plus you are fighting gravity. You should rig a 3:1 or 4:1 purchase on the downhaul with a S hook which you can switch to your reefing points when needed. 2. No the pin of the sprit should never poke through the grommet as there would be severe misalignment and loads on the pin and grommet. As you don't have webbing on your reefing grommets you can tie a piece of line to your grommet and make an eye in the line for the pin. 3. You could put on a track or you could put on two or three eye straps and move your snap shackle from one to the other. Most of us live with one fixed position. Quote
dstgean Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 That makes sense to me. I do have a downhaul setup to achieve tension on the luff. I must have confused the meaning of one of the terms. My downhaul is either 3:1 or 4:1--I'd have to look to be sure. I like the eyestrap solution with several possible locations. What height from parallel to the waterline should they be? 6" above, right at horizontal, and 6" below? Should I just wait and lash it until I get a better idea of how it willaffect sail performance? Should I add a leather chafe guard to the sprit to pad the mast/sprit rub points? I also have a multipart purchase for the snotter. I was trying to send you some pictures to your email, but I kept getting bounced at onboard@bandbyachtdesigns.org Dan Quote
Designer Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Dan, I just looked at your sail plan and I would put the eyestrap 5'6" above where you think that the tack of the sail will sit. I am sorry about the email confusion. My email address is graham@pinelink.org. When the guy from pinelink set me up he suggested that we should use onboard@bandbyachtdesigns.com and when you click on the link it would link through to me. I just haven't gotten around to changing it. Quote
dstgean Posted April 22, 2005 Author Posted April 22, 2005 I need all the length of the sprit I can get and was thinking of putting a dowel in the end of the sprit. Any recommendations? Quote
Travis Votaw Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Charlie Jones installed hardwood dowels into the ends of my sprits on the Princess 22 and they seem to work very well. I don't recall what kind of wood he used. The sprit booms themselves are laminated fur with square cross sections, about 1 1/2 inches on a side. They are very sturdy. Quote
