just this last saturday i bought some boiled linseed oil...i have never used it. i was at lowe's buying some stain for a table that i made for my neighbor.....i hand chopped 12 mortises the other day for an outside table and it sucked...no thanks, forget the romance of that kind of thing....the table turned out great...stained merlot and finished with an outside sealer but a mortiser is on my christmas list.

i bought the linseed oil in anticipation of using it for something...my questions to you include...isn't it too late? the mahogany parts have been varnished several coats now...and boil it? in what? one of my pans? and where? on my stove? i could never....i would have to do it outside on a pit or something...geeez, i love my stove.

It's never too late! If you decide to make more, then you know what to do.

I love my stove too! And I wouldn't think of subjecting it, or my wonderful Stainless cookware to it. I use a $7 hot plate that I got at either Goodwill or a garage sale and a 5# coffee can with a rock to hold things down under an inverted sieve basket. The hot plate doesn't owe me a thing, I've had it for about 20 years and replaced the on/off control/thermostat twice. I purchased it to use in the shop. Primarily with a modified garage sale tea kettle to feed a steam box for bending wood.

I don't drink coffee and had to bribe my son-in-law out of the can. Before that I used an old 2 quart Revere Ware Stainless pot that came from another garage sale for just a couple dollars. No handle so it was really cheap.

I've taken all manor of finishes off of things to boil them in oil. Paint strippers, scrapers, and/or a little sanding and they are ready to do.

My son used a propane powered BBQ and an old pan he got for free. He does other things for leather working and gunstocks with it. But it keeps it out of the house and him out of hot water. :wink:
