Moving to the Great Northwest.

Hey folks, I used to come around here quite a bit. But life has had me too busy this season. In fact, I have been too busy to clean up the boat, make a few changes, and get out and sail. Fortunately, I have a good friend with a Capy Dory 30.

Well, I have just accepted a position in Seattle. So, in about a month, my family will be moving to the great northwest. Unfortunately, I will not be moving my boat (or trailer). If there is anybody on the east coast that would like it, just holler (See Classified Forum).

I hope to build another small sailboat in a year or two. But, I might need a sailing buddy next summer. I will need to learn my way around the boat ramps and waterways of Washington State.

Also, does anybody have any good suggestions for decent reasonable housing south, east, or southeast of Seattle? The office will be at the intersection of I5 & I90. I don't mind commuting 20 to 30 miles if necessary.

20-30 miles won't really get you into 'affordable' housing, IMHO. downside is 20 miles into the area you are talking about is going to take 45 +- in rush hour.

You may want to rent for a while and check out the market. There are lots of bedroom communities, all with widely varied pluses and minuses. Prices vary accordingly.

There is a lot of building happening East, towards North Bend, Duval, Covington, etc. North is going to put you into Snohomish County, South is getting built out though in central and south Pierce county there are some new developments.

I5 and I90? Harborview???

Snohomish County....or even Kitsap if you are willing to take the ferry then bike or bus.

Tis a real zoo over there at rush hour.

My oldest just bought a nice 4br on a quarter acre in Bothel for 200k...the same house woulda been a little more than half that in Kitsap. Check out Whidbey in Island County, too.

Closer in? Bring money and check out the schools, first.

Working at Amazon your in for traffic anywhere you would live. You could live on Beacon Hill but I wouldn't really recommend the public schools. And the prices, ouch!!! Lots of new housing in the Covington, Kent, Auburn area (thats south of the city.) Schools are good...generally. Prices seem to be the most resonable in the area. General cost of living is going to knock you out...kind of pricey. Living on the pinnensela (sp) or the islands generally is cheaper for housing, but taking a ferry and then a bus will greatly increase your travel time. The eastside has some very nice areas, with prices to match, and then you have no choice but crossing the bridge, sometimes that can take a while.

If you can. The advise from capt jake is good if you can swing it with the family and all.

But with all the negative, this is a GREAT place to live!!! Lots and Lots of activities. I wouldn't live anywhere else... and I have!

The housing market is grossly inflated presently, but interest rates make most of these affordable. I would shop around to find the place you 'want' to live before committing. There are a few places left here and there that are what I would call affordable/desireable, just have to be patient and hunt around.
