Does anyone hae experience using cypress as decking? If so, how did you lay it down. I am thinking of using it for the sole of a flats boat Im building. Teak is too heavy and expensive, so I'm looking for alternatives. Thanks.

Cypress is a good wood for your project. It is rot and decay resistant and finishes out nicely. If you can get old wood from a recycler and cut it down and plane it for thickness; you will end up with a fantastic deck material. I would recommend a good oil finish on it rather than using varnish.

I think a penetrating oil would be good. Machine/sand the surface fairly smooth before oiling. If you want a non skid surface, you might be better off varnishing with some sand in it. Or use clear paint base and sand. Sand doesn't leave slivers in bare feet. :D

No, I am the one involved with the teak deck one, that your organization detested so much. Different animal.

Thanks, and the boat still performed at and above projected speeds, with all the charateristics of all of the other same designed hulls, with a fifty hp, except it didn't have any porpoising problems. Nonskid and paint on plywood ,will not fail you now or down the road. But I am sure most "there", too, wish not to accept this minor suggestion, either. :!:

Stablize your deck, and do any decorative item to it at that time. DON'T DEPEND ON your decorative items to be part of your structual items especially cypress for this use. You have defeated part of the purpose of foam cored boats.

Yes, the wood I plan to add will not be structural at all. Its 100% for looks. The boat will be built the same as if there is no wood at all. The actual sole will be H80 Divinycell with 2 layers of biax on either side (45/45 and 0/90), vacuum bagged with epoxy.

Cypress is way too soft for a deck. Thats my opinion. While you are in the process of building, take you several pieces and place it down on some plywood, around your work area and work on it. This may answer some of your rolling of eyes from my thoughts on this subject.
