Wooden Boat Launchings "They said it could't be done

My partner in crime (many boat building projects) got his Weekender in the July Wooden Boat Launchings section. Joe Horvath knew about it a month ago but swore me to seacracy (sp?). We are very proud of Joe here in Cleveland and he even got a plug in for CABBS. CABBS week on Pymatuning is June 18-27th. Joe will have his Weekender there starting the 23. My Vacationer will be there all week. If you are in western PA or Eastern Ohio come for a sail.

Joe and I had some kayaks in the Plain Dealer in January but he left me in the dust and went national :mrgreen:

Got my copy of WoodenBoat yesterday and was shocked to see a weekender in it. Only the second time that has ever happened. The boat looks really sharp and Joe has much to be proud of.

I got mine yesterday as well and was pleased to see Joe's boat in there. I think there could be a bit of a change in thinking with WB's editorial staff as evidenced by the articles on the Birdwatcher and Redwing.

It could also have something to do with the survey on the Wooden Boat home page.

I enjoyed the Birdwatcher article but haven't taken the time to do more than skim the Redwing article.

Nicely done to Mr. Horvath. There may be a sea-change at WB. We'll see.

We've tried running ads off-and-on in WB and have seen zero response. In fact, since the last one we've seen a dismal slide in interest (to the point that some of the members of SP&P are wanting me to shut down the plans again - don't worry, I'll not be shutting anything down for many years!)

I wonder if any of the DIY boat mags will be covering the Big Messabout?

Mike, I wonder if there might be a change in the wind at WB. Perhaps we'll see a few more articles like the ones this time on the Redwing and Birdwatcher and that might pique the interest in building using less traditional methods.

It seems to me that between sites like Frank's here and others such as Duckworks as well as the various small boatbuilder groups on Yahoo! and MSN, there is plenty of activity in the realm of non-traditional boat building.

Perhaps the thing to do is find someone who could build a Weekender or a Vacationer and write a publishable article at the same time. Lots of high quality phots would be needed to document the build. I think cabinet maker quality craftsmanship would also help.

I'd almost like to build another Weekender but I couldn't fit one in my shop anymore. Too many power tools and projects going.

Jim, Sorry I wont be able to make it to Pymatuning. I still have a couple weeks to go on Patriot. Looking forward to a July 4 launching at Atwood Lake. 8)

Mike, I broadcast about a hundred copies of our press release to all kinds of newspapers, magazines (including Family Circle!), and websites.

So far only your website, Bay Weekly and Duckworks have the Mega Mess listed. I hope for better coverage next time. Still, not bad four our first international messabout. See you at Point Lookout! 8)

It's worth noting that the write-up is first in the first column. If I remember correctly they described the Weekender the same as they did in the last time one made "Launchings"
