Mike Donlin Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 I can't remember if we have any HVAC people on this board but my son is over in Iraq and has questions on working on a split (ductless A/C system) 1)If he charges the system w/ R-22 without sucking it down first with a vacuum pump, will it work or is he just wasting the R-22? 2) Any idea of what the pressure should be on the high and low side of the system? I suggested he look for a data plate someplace on the unit. 3) Anything he should be concerned with or watch out for when doing this? He has a set of A/C gauges, I not sure about a vacuum pump. Resources are the important things over there, time they have in abundance. He is mechanically inclined so it shouldn't be much of a challange if he can find the correct info. Anybody know of any links on the web that would have some basic service info? Sorry I don't have more info on brand, type, size of unit. BUt I will make a call in the morning and submit this thread with you post, and it will be replied to, if no one else responds to this issue before then. I was not aware of the statis with him, but glad to at least get an update. I have just heard from another classmate of my son tonight requesting the all too familiar BABY WIPES and paper back books. Actually I have a list for the two guys if anyone wishes to take on a mission of mercy and send out a care package to some of the guys as a group in general. We send them packages and most get passed around among them. Its getting to be that time of year of the warmer weather for sure now. Flyswatters AA Batteries Baby Wipes (they really need these) Food Snack food requested: Ramen noodles, favorite flavor was Cajun chicken (the ones rectangular in the little plastic packages). Guest Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 First off, he will need to suck this system down. This unit sounds like it is a type that is in a motel unit??? He will need some freon to do this too. THe unit may not have fittings on the unit. If so, he may need to solder them into the high and low side. He also can get a small amount of freon from the outside unit, if in fact this is the type system he has there. Now when purging the unit, he will need to allow for some freon to sit in the unit that he is charging, say around ten to fifteen minutes in the middle of the task, and this allows for any moisture in the unit to be picked up by the freon in the purging process. There should be a tag inside with the readings for the unit. Sometimes people in the islands use old refrigerator compressor pumps for vacumn pumps. But I don't know what it may be like in the area tht he is located in and the avaliablilty of one. Fittings and hoses would be a problem for sure if one could be located. Quote
