John Yow Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 I am ready to install the sides and tops of the seats in my CS17 #102. Are people using just epoxy to attach the sides and tops or are screws and/or nails being used the lengths of the seats. Thanks in advance for advice. John Quote

In fact, The only places on my CS17 that have any metal fasteners are the deck framing and centerboard case framing... oh yeah, the hatch hinges have screws... Everything else is epoxy and fiberglass tape. Roger Quote

Roger Peterson Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 I assume you are talking about the seat construction. I used a taped fillet on the seat top where the seat top meets the side of the boat (per plans) and epoxy mixed with silica on the seat framing members (just before laying the seat tops down). I reached inside the "side tanks" thru the access holes on the vertical seat sides to form a small fillet (using the ooze-out from the framing members) on the inside of the seats. It was probably overkill but I had access and I wanted the inside of the tanks clean. :wink: Roger Quote
mustangermatt Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 I just finished the sides on mine, the are filleted and taped both sides of the bottom front and rear edges. The marine fir I am using is 3 ply instead of 5 ply for the 1/4' thickness. This means that it flexes more across the grain than okuome. Graham suggested turning the wood 90 degrees and adding a butt joint for the seat tops. What I wound up doing after much experimentation was adding additional frames to keep the run of unsupported wood below 15 inches. This framework is both screwed and glued to the stringers. It makes a very rigid top that should hold up well to my kids jumping around. I am using a taped rounded seam at the seam at the jont between the seat top seat side and a fillet and taped seam at the jont between the seat top and boat side. I use drywall screws to hold the ply to the frames while the glue dries. I will try to post some pictures tonight. Quote
