I still have a few things to do which require it to be on the building form but it was nice to see the inside of it. The tops of the transoms will be curved and the knees will be trimmed (they are the horns sticking up at the ends) Anyway, it's coming. Quote

Just wondering, are you guys going to get real creative and sew some sort of special blankets/padding for it? Also, what do you use for a finish on the inside..knowing that the baby may roll and chew/gum the surface. One thing I have always thought would be cool is a way to mount it on a frame so that a foot pedel could be used to keep the baby rocking with momentum..sort of a pedel powered lathe or old sewing machine set-up..just a thought, maybe you have already addressed the idea(s).. Simon Posted March 2, 2004 Posted March 2, 2004 Very nice Dave. Question: how did you arrive at the height of the sides? Strikes me that when you put a matress in there it could end up a little low for comfort. Are you planning on sleeping the baby in there, or just supervised rocking? Not really an issue for a very young baby, but the lower the sides, the younger the baby will be before you remove them from the crib. I recently moved my boy into a cot, because he was starting to move around a bit too much. It broke my heart when I though about how much effort I put into it, but I spose there's always the next baby. Also could you tell us how you will suspend it? Some kind of locking mechanism is a must IMO, to stop it rocking when you guys aren't around. Quote

We don't intend for baby sailor to use it for more than a few months. Once the kid can roll over on its own, we'll be moving them to a different bed. Actually the kid probably won't spend many nights in it either. As to suspending it, I'll use a frame similar to the one in the drawing. There will be a short piece of line between the keel and the crossbar of the stand that can be used as a preventer. Quote

Dave R1 Posted March 4, 2004 Author Posted March 4, 2004 Thankee Mr Scott. Although the cradle boat idea is not original, this plan is mine. Actually it started as an almost 8' pram called the Little Breton drawn by Gavin Atkin for stitch and glue construction. I scaled the plan down and redid it for lapped planks. Gavin's plan really only consisted of lines done in Gregg Carlson's Hulls program, a freeware chined-boat design program. The program only gives you hull shapes and develops panels for you. You're on your own for detail work. Anyway, a lot of it is seat of the pants and fit as you go. Kind of like boat building, eh? I'm in the process of redoing it with six planks on a side rather than four. Especially as a cradle with the planks being only 1/8" thick, some of the bevels are too steep. My original intent was to use copper rivets along the seams but the soles and lands end up too narrow to drill a hole through for the rivet. Epoxy, ribs and floors are going to have to do the job of holding it together. Tonight I started fitting the floors. One is ready to set in place. You know, you're not so far away. If you'd like to make the trek, you're welcome to stop by and see it. You could make a day of it and stop at the Nelson cheese factory and the Lark toy shop and maybe stop at the Clinic for an MRI or a hang nail removal. Quote
