styge Posted October 31, 2003 Posted October 31, 2003 I love digging up old subjects! It looks like the closest size I can get to ideal, is 2.5" Dia. with .124" wall thickness. This is still going requiring some effort on my part to ship, given my location. To ship the exact size pushes the price up significantly. Online Metals in Seattle to Juneau, AK is relatively straightforward! My question therefore would be, can any think of any really bad reason for not using .125" thick tubing. It's going to be one piece. I do also intend to fly more canvas than usuall. Grahame is willing to order me up a custom set, with roach and battens. This should be a fun set up when done, considering my Tin Bin weights in right now at 700lbs! and has an extra 5" of beam! Brent Posted October 31, 2003 Posted October 31, 2003 First I have to say that Graham is the bottom line on this issue. He has seen it all. I have heard that a number of people have used .125" tubing, or tapered flag poles 0.125" wall thickness. The one piece mast will simplify the sail track that goes with the full roach and battens. The non-tapering tube will bend less up on top in gusts, so be prepared to for that. The mast will be a heavier than the thinner mast; this may be only slightly significant from a performance standpoint, but will make posting the masts more difficult. I find posting the 0.065" to be easy. In my search lots of folks had the 0.125 wall tubing, and I could get it in 20' lengths. The thinner 0.065 took some serious searching (Shapiro Supply - good price, good service) Bottom line: if it is what you can get go for it. Quote
