Yo Jo. Just had to say that. Scrim the dreaded scrim issue, save me. :wink: You know you made me go over and try to read that thread. It's way to early in the morning for that discussion, my head hurts already. OK I will talk about scrim, that's the stuff they do on whale bones. Oh sorry thats scrimshaw, oops. I told you it was early. Seriously, well I'll try to be serious anyways but no promise's. Scrim is a re-inforcing that is in laminated sheet material. Does that help. I guess not. Before I go to far here [more than likely to late already to worry about that now] lets look at what is called "plain weave". What's plain weave? I just knew you where going to ask that. Plain weave is the weave most fabrics are made with. It has a warp and fill, Yeah, yeah, whats warp and fill. Warp are the fiber bundles that run the length of the fabric and fill are the ones that run across the fabric. Or 0 and 90 degrees. Now scrim is the bundles of fibers [polyester, kevlar, technora, carbon, or what ever that are] that are put in a laminated sheet material. Now in laminated material that is used for sails these bundles are not woven like plain weave. They are layered one over top of the other like making a sandwich. Now I am hungry. Ok laminate or laminated material, yeah yeah I hear you say I know what that means. In a laminate we start with a film we will say mylar, then we add a layer of uni-directional fiber bundles in the warp direction, then we add a layer of same in the fill direction then another layer of film. Then the whole thing runs through this really big machine and presto, Houston we have laminated sail material. Now during the layering process more layers of fiber bundles can be added in either the warp or fill directions or in an X-ply depending on what the end use will be. Now an important thing here is that the scrim in laminates is not woven they are layered. So scrim is all the stuff between the two outer films. Now poly tarp is not a laminate. There are no outer films making a sandwich construction. Poly tarp is a plain weave with either polyester fiber bundles or flat ribbons that is then coated with a polyethylene resin. It is much the same in basic contruction as is dacron sail cloth. But and I do say a very big "BUT" here other than the basic construction they are completely different in quality and materials used. The biggest difference is the yarn count per square inch, poly tarp will have a very low count, where dacron will have a very high count. Dacron is made of the very best yarns available and poly tarp is made of the cheapest stuff available. Geez my head hurts just writing this, it's too early in the morning for this stuff. :wink: Now I make sails out of dacron and laminates. I get my dacron from Challenge and most of my laminates from Dimension Polyant. I no longer use the lower cost laminates and I never used poly tarp. And boy can I get some really cool stuff, I mean really cool stuff. 8) Every time I get a sample of a new laminate sail cloth it's like Christmas. Why do I get so excited about this stuff, beats me I just think it's just too cool for some reason. Unfortunately most of the cool laminates are not for weekenders or gaff rigs But I am crazy enough to make a set of really cool mylar/kevlar optic 2 laminated sails for one. But my sanity can be questioned on a daily basis. Well are you now totaly confused? Later.

Oh Yeah Frank, And that is just the tip of the iceberg up here in the Great Northwest or God's Country as some like to say. Not me but some. The real part of our costs are not in taxes, they are the hidden costs you pay to the goverment. Stuff like licenses and permits and other little things these guys can add on. That's where alot of money really is. Taxes are just a part of the total. And "Oh Yeah Babe" moving is well into the planning stage's now. The desire has been there for some time, but there was always a big snag. Having to find a job where ever you moved to. Well that snag has now been over come. Where ever I go my job goes with me. Kinda opens things up so to speak. Now it's where would I like to go, not where can I go, or where do I have to go. I have certain things I want to have. I want to be near salt water, that is not under negotiation, I want warm weather even in the winter. I hate the cold damp freezing weather. Been there, done that, have the T-shirt. It's just a matter of time now, the plan is already underway. The decision has been made. It's just the final details to work out before setting the whole thing into action. Well Buck it's been interesting so far. That first race was the result of never really have raced the boat and checking the hardware or the hull. It seems to have a few little designs things that the boat will have problems in certain conditions. The second and third races really do show that not having a defender series is not the best thing to do. I know there are not the money's for New Zealand to mount a second challenge to defend the cup. Practice is just that practice, it is no substitute for the real thing. As to who wins I have thought that now that America seems not to be able to mount a strong challenge having the cup move around the world would be a good thing. Having another country dominate for 100 years is not the best thing for the cup and for the interest in the cup. Oh the Swiss if the win would have to have the races in a sea. Being land locked it would most likely be in the Med. Which would be fine. Paul J

Frank, Actually taxes in California are lower than they are in Washington on almost every point. And Washington's taxes are a little lower than Oregon's except fo sales tax. Now here is a small point about taxes. And this is about real important stuff here. BEER. In California the states per barrel tax adds up to $6.00 a barrel. In Washington it's $31.00 a barrel of beer. And these bastards want to raise it by $31.00 a barrel, that would make JUST state taxes on a barrel of beer alone $62.00 a barrel. Man they are hitting below the belt here. Oh and last time I checked our gas tax was higher or on par with California's, our liquior tax is the highest in the nation, our smokes tax is second higest in the nation, and over all we sit at third in per capita taxes in the nation over California who I believe is fourth overall. Damn they piss me off sometimes. I mean the goverment. Yeah sure they are giving us a tax cut, in which day dream of theirs I am not really sure, but one of them they have. Sorry end of rant for now. But I may be back.

Gasoline here is $1.64 a gallon today, three weeks ago it was $1.24 a gallon. Heating oil was $1.14 a gallon last month today it's $1.58 a gallon. What are your local price's. This is price gouging. :x And I am mad as hell about it! Paul J

Joe, The standard mainsail for a weekender made to the plans is 90 sq ft. But this can vary a little depending on who made the sail, but the difference will be small say no less the 2 sq ft difference. The standard jib is as designed is 30 sq ft in area. The 100% jib I have is 40 sq ft and the lapper works out to 49.5 sq ft. The first genoa I made and Tom has that one worked out to 60 sq ft. But you can do the math here. Just remember the standard sail set is 120 sq ft total. Have fun.

Go to Mozilla.Org and download the latest edition of the browser it's free. Mozilla is the browser Netscape was using but the two parted ways. Now Mozilla is an open source browser and has all the functions of any other browser. It like Netscape also has built in email and now can handle multiple email accounts, unlike Netscape. It is also not affected by most virus's and worms. Works well with any anti virus software but I think it works best with Avast which is also free and is updated often, and does not slow down your system like Norton. Here's the link to Mozilla http://mozilla.org check it out and if you download it and use it you will have no problems with the bbs. For Avast software do a search on google or go to download.com and look for it there. Paul J

Gordy, The boat looks good and has a lot put in it as to room and function. Of course the rig is great. I can see why you would like this as to type of sailing you do and the area you sail in. This would be a great boat for hanging out with the bunch that sails on the west coast there at places like Cedar Key and the like. Has true shoal draft which is a huge bonus. Makes the boat beachable for your shallow water sailing. The cabin with two berths and a porta potti and a small place for a galley. It will make overnighting or longer much more comfortable. The only thing I see that I would even think about changing is the cockpit coaming. I like to be able to rail sit if I need or want to, so that maybe one change. But that's just me, others may really like the coaming. I have a question for you here. Is there any ballast going to be put into the center board or is it all going to be in the cabin. Paul J

There you go Frank. You have been thinking about a larger sailboat even looked at P-19's. This looks like a good one for people looking to expand there sailing grounds while still keeping the boat size and overall boat weight down. Plus I love cat-ketches in small boats. Frank, I have no problem with Netscape in most web sites. The other php boards are no problem at all along with most all php and asp sites. But sometimes the java can be a pain and so is true with javascript if it is not well written. I use some javascript on my web site and it works well in everything over 4.0 no matter the browser. I also use frames and tables with no problem at all. I even use Frontpage 2000 as an html editor and it works just fine. As a matter of fact the frames and tables work better in Netscape than they do in IE. Now the older versions of Frontpage and many of the other html editors have some problems with some scripts and the code is not generated well. And yeah I know it's not rocket science it's way worse and there are no absolute answers. But one thing I know for sure is IE sucks the big one. :wink: I just thought I would let you know about the little things with the new setup. Like I said some one has to pay attention to it. Oh and one more small point, I don't think you want to really say that the other 25 to 30% are SOL because of the change. I think we as people who build and design our own website have to make them work for every body. Not just IE and Microsoft's vision of what the internet should look like or even be. Microsoft sucks. Frank, Just to let you know the Home Page is also showing the same side scrolling the forum was. It's caused by the same thing. The script pushes it right because of the links list. Just a thought why not put that link list at the top right under the Messing About logo. Would solve the problem for most all screen sizes. Oh I have a 17" screen set at 800x600. I am not going to set it to 1200x800 the text gets too small. Just thought I would let you know. Paul J Oh and versions of Netscape below 5.0 will have a major problem with the php code. Some of the stuff like my gallery will not show up at all along with other pages. I don't use IE and won't use it as I don't like it. I use Netscape for most things but for this forum I will be using the latest version of Mozilla which has no problems and is way better than IE and it's FREE . Just more for you to think about and deal with. Sorry but someone has to tell you. :?

Most php boards are set for 800x600 screens if you are running a small monitor you may have problems with scrolling. And when some one posts a long url to some photo that will happen to all but the bigger screens. And now we have to deal with file size. When some fool with dsl or better posts a picture or links to one of mass file size you will have to wait for the damn thing to load every time you want to see who posted. Talk about a long down load time on dialup. And some of have no choice as the faster ISP's are not an option. Plus if too many people post pictures on the same thread you have to download them all every time. Like I said I am not a big fan of php boards as too many people have no internet sense at all. And no idea of file size. Just my two cents. Paul J Oh and Frank the other boards are not the same as this main forum. They show email address's and none of the other cute stuff.
