Balboa 20 Chad

This boat is in need of rescuing and it is just down the road from me. So far I think it might be a Balboa 20. Photos of a Balboa 20 to follow in next post. Chad

Just so you guys know. I got a real tight fitting stub mast out with a pry bar and mini sledge. I decieded that I want the mast to come into the cabin to handle the rake and have already rough cut the slot in the foreward bulkhead. No turning back no. Chad

The other way I thougth about doing it was to bevel the mast at the tabernacle, but that would give my mast a bowed look. Chad

Make sure you pay attention to the rake of your mast. I had put everything in and thought I was going good, but alas my mast rake was 7 degrees too much. This happened because somehow my foreward bulkhead was off. I didn't catch this till I tried to raise the sail. Now I have to go in and take the mast base out and cut the forwared bulkhead to allow the mast to come back in the cabin to get the rake correct. Just a note for new time builders to make sure they check the angle of the foreward bulkhead before getting to far so that they can make adjustments as needed. Chad

I'm sorry. This the gooseneck for where the boom attaches to the mast on the weekender. The plans call for a 1" pipe drilled with holes at 90 degrees to each other and eyebolts in the mast with a 1/8" strap on the boom. Chad

Okay I was looking at the plans for the gooseneck and I'm not sure if that is the best way. Anyone done it like the plan and how does it work? One of my concerns is the pivot point. Does the 1" pipe pivot and how bad does that work agaisn't the mast? If the 1/8" strap is suppossed to flex with the boom movement how well does that last? Chad

If this is a sliding hatch, what do you do to keep it from scratching your cabin top? Chad

Yes, I will put some in. Just haven't found the ones I want yet. We are thinking about putting bronze port holes in, if I can find some reasonable. If not it may be deck plates, but it will eventually get them. Chad

Mike, I don't think that stepping on the end of them will break one. I sat on one when it was the only one in and it had no give. The slats are 7/8" x 7/8" with only 20" between supports. Chad

Dave, they aren't that bad. The are about 9" deep and you shouldn't have to many problems sitting on them. and yes do have a narrow bottom :wink: I like the way they open up the cockpit and give plenty of leg room. They are plenty strong and don't even move when I sit on them. The brace in the middle provides plenty of support while not gettin in your way. Chad
