If you have any interest in canoes and canoe design order a copy of "BARK CANOES : The art and Obsession of Tappan Adney". A book beautiful enough for the coffee table, and a concise history of the integration of native american technology and the development of the canoe. Canoes have changed very little from the forms developed by the native tribes.
The story of Tappan Adney, whose own book on bark canoes was completed after his death by Howard Chapelle, is worth the price of the book. Adney's models are works of art and photographed perfectly. I'll be making a trip back to the Mariners Museum to see them in person.
