Varnishing/Oiling Frames Prior to Assembly

Is there any wisdom to varnishing/oiling frames prior to assembly to be sure the surfaces at the stringer/frame interfaces are well protected?

For varnishing it would be a good idea.  Varnish is a shell. Oil penetrates and seals differently.  It won't hurt any to oil first, but most of us don't bother.  Brush it on a little heavy at the joints and wipe the excess off a few minutes later.
