Aft deck on Lapwing

Hi Graham/Tom

I would be interested on your comments on how an aft deck on Lapwing work work.  I liked it on my CS17.  I would build it in where the aft hatch/seat current sits - so it would just involve a little work on the bulkhead that is already there (designed to be cut back later in the current plan).  Would this leave too small a cockpit in your opinion - or would it just use space that on the 'Coaming' thread people say they do not use anyway.

I like the aft deck arrangement for many of the reasons outlined by Ray and Wes et al.

I remember that Graham mentioned in a thread on his EC 22 that he brought the tiller through the transom to save a little weight.

I would like the aft deck to remain clear so I am having difficulty picturing access.

The hatch in Charlies photo stands proud of the deck which I am not crazy about.

I am not sure if a self draining hatch on a deck with camber would be a problem.

I wonder if anyone has some ideas on access to the aft deck? What about through the bulkhead?

First thing, be careful who you call a Yankee.  

I don't really like an enclosed aft deck and so Lapwing has a seat with opening to the transom below.  There is more than ample storage in the two side lockers and forward compartment, so more is not not needed for me.  I am leaving for Maine in a hour or two for the Small Reach Regatta and Lapwing's lockers are well filled with camping gear.  I like the the transom open and have a drain plug for water to run out when the boat is stored with the bow high.  I would not have a stern compartment on any Core Sound that I might build but that is just my preference.

If You want an aft deck and enclosed compartment below, I see no reason why it would not be easy to fit one.  If I did that I would fit a drain tube with plug along the keelson and through the closed space.
