Ply availability in West Australia??

Okay now I know theres several other West Aussies on this board and Ive been goin nuts lately trying to find a closer source of Marine Ply at a reasonable price here! :evil: The best Ive been able to get his been from Adelaide! :shock: But then Ive got to buy the lot in one whack to get the better price!

Im presently tossing up whether to build the Vacationer... the TC670 from Mike Waller http://www.wallerdesign.com.au ...the J6 from Ross Turner http://members.ozemail.com.au/~rhturner/ and the only other contenders at this time are the "elf" and "Eun Mara" from Iain Oughtred from Duckflats http://www.duckflatwoodenboats.com/ I havent figured out how to put the name over top of the url yet!! :oops:

yeah some choice eh? :? ...But believe me Ive narrowed it down!!! :roll: A FLAMIN LOT by gar!!! 8)

Anyways the others all stipulate ONLY Marine grade ply but it seems to be that construction grade is fine for the vacationer?... all the designs above are epoxied and fibreglassed inside and out... Im just wondering why? if there is a reason of course!

So Simon and Julian and any other West Aussies where did you get your gear??!!! The flamin prices Ive been getting here are over the flamin top! :evil:

I got most of my plywood from a company called SwanView Timbers in Fremantle, but they have shut down now. They sold both marine and exterior cheaper than anywhere else I could find it. I brought the rest of the plywood that I've used so far at (shudder)

Bunnings, but I would never recomend those tree chipping rip off merchants. I've emailed a company called Cullity Timbers (who have a branch in Mandurah) and asked for a quote on 12mm, 9mm and 6mm marine and exterior. I'll let you know when the quote comes back.

There was a truck from the company below (GBI) parked outside someone's house down the road from me, and it turns out they are just round the corner form me. They don't have a web presence though so I (or you ) will have to call them to find out what sort of deal they have. Sooo next wee question is... where did you get that other expensive stuff from? the poxy and f/glass? which Ive been quoted at $130per litre for wests and $115 for 6 lits botecote... this is enough for one of Mac McCarthys wee lassie canoes! {11ft}

yet on the larger order from Adelaide I can get 30lits for $400... but only if I buy the entire large order!

Hi again there Simon... queery here mate Ive just been reading the faq on the weekender site and was wondering what wood you used for the keel? I mean we dont have a lot of what they suggest!... so did you use pine or jarrah or karri or something else? Just curious of course

I used Jarrah from a company called Westwood timbers in Welshpool. Check out my website for some construction details, I'd be happy to answer any questions about it. In fact I used Jarrah for basically everything (stringers, rubrails etc) that isn't plywood on the boat. I know that will make it heavier, but I like working with it and I can imagine situations where it could be an advantage.

As to the resin, I bought all mine from a place called Fibreglass and Resin Supplies on Kew St Welshpool. Its run by a happy and helpful bunch of ladies who will sell you just about anything to do with their name. I used an epoxy glue (rather than thickened resin) which I can't remember the name of (multi-something??). For resin I have a generic brand, made by the same people licensed to manufacture WEST in Aus. Seems to work pretty well so far.

For the record I don't neccessarily get the best deals, in fact when I really want to do something I get what I can when I can - or just use what I have. I'm not proud of shopping at Bunnings at all, but they're open til 7, 7 days a week, you pay for the convenience though.

Thanks for heads up Simon... Was wondering about Jarrah but figured it would be too heavy or dear in such a large size?... Will give you a hoi when Im up that way maybe we can meet up have a yarn and I can have a sticky beak at your "baby"!! 8)

Hey Shane, I sure do like your choice of boat designs. I'm building an Eun Mara (as soon as the kitchen remodel is done) and now my son and I are building an Elf! It's going to be his boat - he's going to build it, I'm just going to be the advisor. :wink: We are going to order the plans this week. He's paying half. He's 13 now and I know he can do it. If he gets stuck his little sisters can help.

What's the word with the trip? It doesn't look like the four week duration deadline is gonna happen. :cry: If you are able to come I hope the timing works out. If you are in Maine when I am in New Jersey at the big family reunion I don't know what I'll do. :? You'd miss seeing the Elf under construction and taking the fin boat out for a pedal. :cry:

Yes we do sell to the public.

We do not sell imported marine ply as it is not preferred by the boat

builders due to its splintering when cut.

We do however sell imported plywood which would be classed as exterior ply.

The finish is a C-Face and C-Back with a WBP bond ( Marine Glue).

Our Australian ply in both exterior and marine is manufactured by Austral

Plywoods in Brisbane. The timber used in the plywood construction is called

Hoop Pine which is a marine specie. There web site is:

In my opinion these prices would be pretty typical, you could find it cheaper, and you could definitely find it dearer (though you may have to haggle :lol: )
