Bay River Skiff 15 - Core Sound 1

Hi,

I am from Finland and looking for a boat to build, hope to find a secure boat that is good under sail and also good with motor. A huge benefit is easy to rig, as in our neighborhood there is a protected route with a low bridge.

BRS15 and CS15 sounds good alternatives.

The use of the boat will be archipelago sailing, but also some open water day sailing in good conditions, crew will be 1 - 4.

Hope users of both boats can encourage me to choose the right alternative...

I built the BRS 15.  I sail on inland lakes mostly.

If you plan to sail on big water I would suggest you go with the CS17.

My boat takes a lot of splash when beating to windward with 2 ft waves. 

The CS has a side deck. That makes it easier to sit on the rail for balance.

I was envisaging both BRS and CS and discussed it with few experienced Raid Finland skippers during recent event. The choice is BRS because of at least these points:

1/ better for rowing (very important thing at RF is to be able to go forward with no wind or against wind along narrow channels among islands)

2/ lihgter and narrower (what means faster when rowing)

3/ no side fore and decks (need two rowing stations)

4/ easier to build (I have a few months to built the boat)

Of course there are boats on Raid which are rather hard to be rowed (H-jolle for example) but those poeple don't like to row, and posibilities of H-jolle allow them to win the race every time they attend :-)

In my personal case the second idea to use the boat is beach cruising along Polish sandy Baltic coast. BRS is still very convenient. 

So, the key question seems to be what would you do with your boat beyond Raid Finland?  What would be your waterways? Sure that for long range cruising at open finnish waterways it would be better to have a CS boat.

Well I have an idea to check this: there's so called "activity day" during the raid, and it's no race this day, just trying other's boats and things like this. I you had an opportunity to arrive to the raid camp this day we would sail together. This year raid is supposed to be located right from Helsinki , close to Russia border. No official announcement so far, alas.

if the Raid Finland 2008 takes place near Helsinki, there is a good chance that I could be able to visit the camp, and have a chance to admire your BRS in the right element . Will keep an eye on the Raid sites to get hold on the race program and route. I think that the BSR would be a fine boat for us, as we would do day trips in the archipelago, and mainly only in good weather. The Raid Race is also an interesting thing to attend, one should always have dreams and plans for the future... .
